I was wondering if anybody noticed this

SI mentioned it in an article as well (link) and I've seen one or two other comments about it around the internet.

It probably would have been a lot bigger deal if the Bucs had ended up losing, but either way I feel like this was really bad.

Yes, people make mistakes. But if you're, say, a heart surgeon, a police officer or an airline pilot, people get upset.

An NFL referee isn't as important as any of those things, but millions of dollars are involved in any given NFL game. That's why people get upset when mistakes are made, especially blatant ones.

At the time, the DJ (aka HL) spotted the ball and immediately made a forward pointing motion, which is the signal to the referee it is a first down.  I'm not sure it was, in fact it might not have been, but that was his judgement.  Then he tossed it to the umpire (I assume) who moved it further forward.

If I am right about what the DJ's motion, the final spot's only effect was another foot or so.  The main issue it was already called a first down.  There was no challenge, but had if there had been, then it would have been an issue.

Take the yellow line out of those pictures and you are left with "I think" there is a difference between the two spots.  I have no idea whether the NFL uses the yellow line or not in instant replay.  My suspicion is no.

Hard for me to ever be objective when it comes to other teams getting screwed by officiating, but yeah, it was bad...  but, then again, I have felt like for years, as much as Boger's crew screws us with calls, it often seems like they're just as bad for both teams...  you just don't want to be on the receiving end of what ends up being the most pivotal call...  but his crew looks like a bunch of inept idiots everytime we've had them.

He's been screwing the Panthers way before Cam. If I remember correctly he's a New Orleans native.
