Props to Poe

He has to get credit for several of the sacks. He was collapsing the interior all game forcing Murray to scramble.  Looking good so far in the 3-4. I even saw Obada blowing up the middle as well.  D-line came together in second half & hope this is starting a trend. Rushed four most the game & was getting pressure without the need to blitz. Limited Arizona to 126 Net passing yards. Pretty damn good.

In all fairness he was not very good last year, or particularly good in Atlanta before that.

In all fairness, he wasn't "bad" last year, and he was actually better the year before. Some of you look at everything in a vacuum. He was above average last year, particularly against the run (and that was in a scheme that wasn't the best fit). Don't believe me? Do some research. Sure, he didn't get a lot of sacks, but he really never did. He's gets push though, and unlike what some suggest, he must be accounted for. So far this season, he's getting more push than I've seen Star get a whole season.

No! I was repeatedly told that he sucks by the Huddle-oligists! You can't be right!

He has sucked. But he has also been in a 4-3.  Can’t think of another game he’s been here other than today he has looked average to above average.

Thought that was the point of the thread...

Good new because he hasn’t been worth his 10+ million contract.

Yea I think he’s been average at his very best since he’s been here. That’s not going by any metric or star, just comparing him to other DTs making his money.

May not be all his fault due to the 4-3. As a NT he seems to be worth his money.

In his words ‘doesn’t matter 4-3 or 3-4 if you can play, you can play’ is, well, completely false not only in his case but a lot of players.

As a rough reference, Poe was PFF's 82nd ranked interior DL last year, a whopping 10 spots above Vernon Butler at 92. I also didn't say anything about Star, who I feel like had a monstrous 2013 both stuffing the run and rushing the passer but steadily declined thereafter.

Is that the end-all definitive source of truth? No, definitely not. But even assuming they're 25% low that puts him around 60th, smack at the bottom tier of starting interior lineman. I watched every game last year (a rarity since I am not a Carolina local) and 82nd fits about what I saw... not a great year in either the run or pass. This year has been better, be it scheme or otherwise.

    • I mean, I think you're being a little hyperbolic with the last statement, but point taken.
    • Pass rush was the biggest issue in tonight’s game, and we were tied for 28th in sacks this season. That is a major area of need that has to get addressed this offseason. I just don’t see a path where there’s a game changing QB you can bring in with where we are drafting and quality of veterans that will be available. We certainly can do better than Dalton as a backup, and should ideally have a developmental guy  (perhaps a day 3 pick this year). We have bryce for one more year on a reasonable contract and then I think 2027 is the year that you reset that position (unless he massively improves).
    • Agreed, honestly basically bringing this group back as a healthy unit would be alright.  Brady Christensen should be resigned to a very reasonable deal with him recovering from the Achilles.  Atleast we're alright at 4 of our 5 spots with Lewis, Mays, Hunt, and Moton, Nijman was decent.  While if we can snag a deal on someone, take a stab, however our resources need to go to Linebacker, Pass Rush and a real option outside Tmac (coker is amazing, but if we can get someone who isnt braindead opposite Tmac, we can fully unleash Coker AND Tmacs full potential, cant move him into the slot if racoon boy is out there licking doorknobs).
