Did Cam’s dabs and grandiose celebrations lead to his downfall injury wise?

To the OP:

I think his showboating may play into it a little. But I also think alot of players are starting to understand the NFL is entertainment. And kids like the way Cam plays/dabs/dances/etc.

The real reason Cam gets a little extra, is because of his physicality, his size, his strength. Come playing around with him if you want, and you'll get trucked or stiff-armed 10 yards down the field.

I disagree. I think Cam has always been more vulnerable in the pocket than on the run.

The team did need to check the designed runs, but Norv really did that last season. My issue is Cam staying in the pocket waiting on someone to get open on pass plays when he could clearly just run for a first down. A lot of successfull "passing" QBs will run when it's given to them. It just seems like Cam refuses to do it now.

if that's what he'll do i'm all for it.   and take that first read if its there even if its for 7 yards.  and get to the line in time to make adjustments.   and slide!     if he wants to go out and play like '15 til the wheels come off, i guess i could be for that too, but it just doesn't seem like, to me, that's in the best long term interest of the team, or himself.  as an adrenaline junkie myself if that's what he wants to do i certainly understand it.

Reminded me of something...

Some years back, prior to an Eagles-Bucs playoff game, Warren Sapp called Donovan McNabb a running back who passes sometimes.

When the game was played, it looked like McNabb failed to take advantage of some obvious running opportunities. The Eagles ended up losing.

I said at the time I thought McNabb was trying to prove Sapp wrong, but in doing so he actually helped his team lose the game.

It's one of those times where an interview actually turned out to be part of the game plan.

Downfall is a little premature don’t you think?

that seems to be what 1/2 people want and have always wanted. The team to lose and be irrelevant just because they hate a guy for being flamboyant and not a “good ol boy”

There are people who would rather see the team lose than win with Newton, but I seriously doubt it's anything close to half the fan base.

There are, likewise, a small number of people who would rather see the team lose than win with anybody other than Newton.

Both viewpoints are ignorant.

The vast majority of us just want to see the team win regardless of who happens to be playing at the time.

It might be against the rules but I don't think it should be.

I don't like how they continually soften the game every year. This isn't soccer.

I think the rules should be rolled back to 1985.

in 1985 the game wasn't literally played with super human players like today.  NFL frankly, is doing all they can to prevent someone being killed on the field.

If today's players (big, faster, stronger) played like it was 1970-1980.....it would literally be a modern day gladiator sport.  While it might be "cool" to some it wouldn't be America's pastime.   I mean MMA is fun to watch.  I don't let my kid watch it.

    • Interestingly I think we have kind of of gone through this as an organization. Richardson implemented an FO driven tank. Bad roster, no cash spent, coach uninterested. It may have been for different reasons but I think the results were the same. A team that wasn't going to win many if any games. We ended up with the #1 pick. Cam Newton came in and changed the franchise. It worked, but Cam himself pointed to the losing culture in the locker room needing to be changed. It probably took about 2-3 years for that to happen. Tank worked pretty damn well for us. Cam is one of one. Not another like him, everyone can't deliver on his draft status AND change a culture basically on his own.  So as an exercise here are the last 30 #1 picks. If you tanked and got to pick #1 how many of these guys do you think were worth it? Not just good players, but franchise changers. Guys who will take your culture and shift it so the tank was actually worth it. I would say maybe 9 or 10 guys would be worth a tank, pending the last 5 picks?    2025: Cam Ward (Miami (FL)) - Tennessee Titans 2024: Caleb Williams (USC) – Chicago Bears 2023: Bryce Young (Alabama) – Carolina Panthers 2022: Travon Walker (Georgia) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2021: Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2020: Joe Burrow (LSU) – Cincinnati Bengals 2019: Kyler Murray (Oklahoma) – Arizona Cardinals 2018: Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma) – Cleveland Browns 2017: Myles Garrett (Texas A&M) – Cleveland Browns 2016: Jared Goff (California) – Los Angeles Rams 2015: Jameis Winston (Florida State) – Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2014: Jadeveon Clowney (South Carolina) – Houston Texans 2013: Eric Fisher (Central Michigan) – Kansas City Chiefs 2012: Andrew Luck (Stanford) – Indianapolis Colts 2011: Cam Newton (Auburn) – Carolina Panthers 2010: Sam Bradford (Oklahoma) – St. Louis Rams 2009: Matthew Stafford (Georgia) – Detroit Lions 2008: Jake Long (Michigan) – Miami Dolphins 2007: JaMarcus Russell (LSU) – Oakland Raiders 2006: Mario Williams (North Carolina State) – Houston Texans 2005: Alex Smith (Utah) – San Francisco 49ers 2004: Eli Manning (Mississippi) – San Diego Chargers 2003: Carson Palmer (USC) – Cincinnati Bengals 2002: David Carr (Fresno State) – Houston Texans 2001: Michael Vick (Virginia Tech) – Atlanta Falcons 2000: Courtney Brown (Penn State) – Cleveland Browns 1999: Tim Couch (Kentucky) – Cleveland Browns 1998: Peyton Manning (Tennessee) – Indianapolis Colts 1997: Orlando Pace (Ohio State) – St. Louis Rams 1996: Keyshawn Johnson (USC) – New York Jets 1995: Ki-Jana Carter (Penn State) – Cincinnati Bengals
