I'm a HUGE Cam fan but with his recent injruy history and the fact that he's already under contract with a relatively cap friendly figure for a QB in today's NFL, it would be absolutely insane to extend him right now. Let him get healthy and see what he has next year.

Absolutely. It would also be insane in my opinion to preemptively trade or release him without seeing if he can get healthy.

We are not paying a lot for our QB group overall even if we keep Cam at $19M next year.

The biggest question to me is if Cam will be willing to go into next year as it. His situation is somewhat unique, but I'm hard pressed to believe any former MVP would acquiesce to taking on all the risk in playing out a contract year.

I think he honestly would be more inclined than his agent or advisors to let that happen.

Regardless of all the national nonsense, Cam has always been the consummate teammate and leader, and he has never put his interests before the team.

To be fair, they've spent the better part of the last few years trying to get him healthy.

Committing 20 million to a guy you're not sure can play is a lot to ask.

I am with Tepper on this one. A gm and HC whose futures with the team are in serious doubt should not be allowed to extend an aging qb whose injury issues create major question marks about his ability to perform going forward.

I don't agree with the decision to cut bait, I'd rather gamble on the last year, even if it means paying a STIFF penalty for being wrong(Cam goes MVP style and wants mega-bucks). But, I also would not let Marty and Ron make that decision if he is going to can them anyway.

I basically see this in a couple of ways:

1. If I was Cam, I would not want to play on the last year of the contract. As much as he's been hurt, it represents too much risk financially on his end. Either the team commits to him for next year and beyond or he pressures the staff to get him to a team that will.

2. If I was the current staff (Rivera and Hurney), I would do everything possible to bring back Cam next year. This is where we get into trouble (see Hurney's history with Delhomme and that extension). In this case, I'd imagine we add a year to Cam's contract and see what we have next year. If he balls out and shows that he is healthy, Cam gets a mega extension. If not, you trade him. This is where we'll see if Hurney has truly learned from his previous mistakes.

3. If I was Tepper, would I trust the current administration to make these decisions? If that answer is no, he needs to get Hurney out soon and get a new GM in before the end of the year and let him make those determinations. I can see a total restructure of the football operations, something in the mold of what Tepper wants.

4. If I was Kyle Allen, I'd continue to do what I'm doing now and show the administration that he can be the franchise QB. That would make the decision of what to do with Cam easier in that regard. Kyle would and should be first in line to show he can lead the franchise past this year.

With that being said, the deciding factor, to me, is who is going to be in the front office when its time for this decision to be made. That will tell us everything we need to know. If Hurney and Rivera survives, we'll have Cam next year. If it's a different administration, then Cam is gone. I don't trust the current staff now to properly evaluate the situation and move forward, since that likely means that they are fighting for their jobs once again.

On the other hand, who can we realistically get at QB next year if Cam leaves? A starter would cost us at least $25 million on the open market, if not more. We're not going to be in range of a top-tier QB either. We're in the middle. So ride it out with Allen? Hope Grier comes around? Cam is probably our most cost-effective option right now at QB for next year, unless Allen or Grier shows that Cam is unquestionably expendable.

Either way, this is going to be a wild offseason.

The tide is shifting towards Tepper being the guy who doesn't want Cam anymore, and if that's the case, a whole lot of people are going to start hating him.

He can handle it.

Has the ultimate F.U. money.

The thing that makes me less worried is that he's so rich that he doesn't have to worry about making money for the team. One has to think that its basically a toy for him, so he's going to spend a little to make that toy more enjoyable. Hopefully he opens up the wallet for some exciting stuff.

Collect $200 & Pass Go.

You my friend have nailed it.

This thing is a hobby for Mr. Tepper, plain and simple.  It's like the guy who has 68 Ferrari's in a warehouse somewhere....does it because he likes it.

If this team loses a $100 million in any one year that's rounding error for Tepper....gives him the ultimate ablility to take a long-term view.

Mark Cuban's track record in the NBA is another example of a great owner who put wins first, and second, and third, and fourth, and fifth, etc....Cuban paid luxury tax bills for a decade which culminated in a World Championship --- Mike Jordan can't compete with that sort of guy & his wealth (not to mention intellect).

I miss Cam Newton

I can honestly say that Thursday night game against the Bucs was the worst feeling I have ever had at any sporting event

I must also say that we are making the assumption that Cam wants to stay here and I’m not sure that is true anymore

I’ve seen it very subtly. And I don’t blame him   It has nothing to do with Charlotte or the fans
