While there’s definitely risk in locking up Cam Newton through his age 34 season, the bigger risk would be trying to replace him. When Cam is at his best he is a devastating weapon who can go out and actually win games for his team. There are only a very, very small number of NFL quarterbacks with the franchise-altering upside of a healthy Cam Newton.

Giving Cam an extension and hoping he returns to his previous elite form is a risk, but trying to replace him via the draft or giving Kyle Allen another 30-40 starts to prove himself is even riskier. At some point in the near future Marty Hurney is going to need to make a monumental decision about the No. 1 quarterback position.

Cam was playing pretty well in 2018 but not at an all pro level. Stats can be misleading. He had a 103 passer rating against Pittsburgh last year. Anyone think he had a good game against Pittsburgh. Just looking at stats you might think so.

He said pro bowl not all pro.

Speculation is speculation whether it's from Joe Person, Jourdan Rodrique or "Mick Smiley". Just because you agree with it, doesn't make it more accurate. Bottom line is, both sides present good cases but we won't know until February. So let's enjoy the 2nd half of football season. Because before we know it, we will be killing time using mock draft simulators instead of talking about actual football games.

I mean, he's not just suggesting having Newton play out next year. He wants the Panthers to extend him.

Extend a guy who, by the time next season rolls around won't have played for a good season and a half,  hasn't been healthy in probably a good two or three years and is coming off a couple of shoulder surgeries.

There are major questions as to whether Newton will be willing to play a "prove it" season, but at this point pretty much nobody takes the idea extending him seriously. That's just way too big a risk.

To be brutally honest, that's probably more wishful thinking than analysis.

      Allen was borderline unplayable in College.  He's an absolute unicorn in terms of his career panning out the way it has.

      It's a step up in competition as well. The gap in athletic skill is narrowed from what was faced at the college level.
