On par to be one of the worst run D's ever

Heres a reality check....5.17 yards allowed per carry...1.89 rushing TD's per game.

Only five teams in history have done this over a full season.

None of this previous five where as bad in YPC and TD's allowed per game.

If this sh%t keeps up then they will make it six teams, possibly #1 of all time.

Very embarrassing. Don't think for one second that every team doesn't know this. Sad state of affairs...still want to go to the playoffs?

Yes. Are you advocating tanking??

Nope.....just the facts. If they can't stop the run, ass beatings will be coming up. Especially from playoff teams.

Okay, I thought it was an odd ending to the stats. It's too late to start tanking anyway, it wouldn't accomplish much.

I still think the run defense is capable of being improved THIS season. Time will tell if it does.

Does anyone else think that there's too much emphasis, especially by players like Shaq, to try and strip the ball rather than make a good tackle? Several times during the Packers game, he was pawing/punching at the ball with one hand and hanging onto the ball carrier with the other, and getting dragged several yards after contact. Pissed me off because we wouldn't need turnovers so badly if they'd just make decent tackles and stop the run.

From hearing Ron talk it’s really not a big deal. He said the huge chunk plays are making the stats look worse than they are.

This is coming from a guy who supposedly knows defense

what a load of horse poo. Sure its not a big deal to get obliterated on the ground every single game with no end in sight...

yes very much so. just about every player on the defense has been carried 5 extra yards while they were just trying to fruitlessly wrestle the ball away instead of tackle

I think that take was a little out of context from his comments.  He went into more detail in print,  https://www.newsobserver.com/sports/article237259104.html

Panthers coach Ron Rivera is growing increasingly concerned with his team's struggles against the run — and with good reason.

The Green Bay Packers ran for 163 yards and Aaron Jones scored three times on the ground in a 24-16 win over Carolina on Sunday, continuing an ugly trend for the Panthers run defense.

Over the past three games, Carolina (5-4) has allowed its opponents to amass 516 yards on the ground and 10 touchdowns rushing, while averaging more than 6 yards per carry.

"Basically, what happened was we got gashed on a couple of plays," Rivera said. "Those are things that you just can't have happen. It's happened three weeks in a row now where we have given up a couple of big runs per game — and that really puts a lot of things into perspective, unfortunately."

Rivera said coaches will be paying extra attention this week to make sure everyone is where they need to be on defense, particularly up front.

"As far as our defensive front is concerned, we are a gap control defense, which means that there is accountability," Rivera said. "When you look at the gaps and look at the scheme, are the guys where they are supposed to be?"

As a general rule, getting gashed on the ground is preferable to being gashed through the air. Even with the occasional chunk run, it takes forever to score when running the ball. Which is why we were still in the game against GB even though we gave up 160+ yards on the ground.

Now if you let a team throw all over you, with a handful of chunk plays? That team can roll you over in a heartbeat. Giving up 400+ yards through the air will definitely put points on the board.

So if I had my druthers? I will take getting gashed on the ground over being gashed through the air.

Best case though? Limit both, and roll to victory. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Shouldn’t they have been paying attention to this after every game.

    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
