Joey Slye is actually very consistent

He's been bad. It's pretty much a foregone conclusion at this point that his time is up.

But guess what? Here's the actual silver lining in all this. Check out where Joey is on this list below of current Panthers contracts.

That's right, the very bottom. He is making peanuts. He's below even Reggie Bonnafon. This gives us flexibility and will allow us to pursue all options at kicker for the future.

We've seen the highs and lows of an inconsistent rookie kicker, and we've also seen the highs and lows of an inconsistent veteran kicker. Maybe it's time to meet somewhere in the middle?

Problem is all the good kickers are already on a team and the only ones left to pick from are the rejects. Also alot of drafted kickers don't pan out all that well either. Gano is fine. Most kickers in the NFL have moments they choke.

There's always a kicker carousel in the NFL. Hard to say what things will look like next year. Things can change quickly.

Beyond the availability aspect, the issue with Gano is he is coming off knee surgery for an injury so bad he couldn't even set foot on the field. That's never a good sign for a player whose career relies on their legs. There is a possibility of rolling the dice with him in 2020 but realistically one year is about all you'll get out of him with knee problems. In 2021 he will be 34 and regardless we will still be looking for a future kicker. It really will boil down to what we feel will be the best situation all around. Either you rent Gano for one year or you go ahead and look for the next guy. Gano will cost 4.5 million against the cap next year versus 3 million to cut him. The final decision will be based entirely around how healthy he looks next offseason.

Fortunately for Slye, the season is over anyways. So they might as well keep rolling with him for a while to see if he can right the ship. It sucks because he is 6-9 from 50+, yet has missed 4 xp this year.

Counter argument: tbh I think we may have the worst field goal blocking in the league. If he didn't push the kick yesterday right it would have been blocked. Doesn't excuse the earlier 2 xp misses though.

It doesn't excuse 71% kicking, but you are right, it's fairly likely the kick would have been blocked.  The guy jumped the center and was on his feet in the backfield, right up the middle.

    • fuging Christ dude this isnt hard.  Like at all.  I get you simping for this poo team is your thing but sometimes you have to look at reality.   Even removing his bum knee from the equation, none of this made sense.  He is 31.  He has been paid handsomely for his service here.  He was currently under contract for this season.  Why in the holy fug did anything have to be done 2 weeks before the season started.   The people for this move, in this thread are saying A) He deserved it (this is the nfl it doesnt work like that  B) It frees up cap space (then why in the fug didnt we do this in Feb or C) You logic (We are getting a deal at 53 million guaranteed for the next 3 years.   You realize with this deal we cannot cut or trade his ass for 3 years.  You understand this right?   So in my opinion we should have let this ride into the offseason and go from there, what he is going to threaten to walk, big fuging deal he would be 32 on a chronically bad knee, what other moronic franchise is going to give him 40 million up front?  It wasnt going to happen.   And you are acting like its impossible to replace a 32 year old RT with a bum knee.  Just go and draft someone, move Icky to RT.  There are tons of options instead of extending this dude 2 weeks before the fuging season.  The truth is Morgan and the shitheads in the FO fell for this dudes crying act and got all sentimental and shelled out another ext.  We are a poverty ass franchise that doesnt act professionally
    • Amazing what the prospect of being traded to Carolina will do for contract negotiations.
    • 5 Im glad football is back but after the embarrassment that was the browns pre season game where our starting D made Sanders look like a serviceable NFL QB, I lost hope again for a successful Panthers campaign this year.  I do hope I’m wrong!
