The Chiefs have solidified their lead in the AFC West over the last few weeks and kicker Harrison Butker has helped them do that.

Butker hit a game-winning field goal to knock off the Vikings in Week Nine and has made 10-of-11 field goals and 12-of-13 extra points since the start of November. He’s made all five of the field goals he’s tried from at least 40 yards and posted the second most points in the league over that period despite only playing four games over the last five weeks.

The NFL announced on Thursday that Butker has been named the AFC’s special teams player of the month. He was named the conference’s special teams player of the week after the Vikings game.

Butker is 25-of-29 on field goals and 37-of-39 on extra points over the course of the entire season. He’ll be in New England with the rest of the Chiefs on Sunday.

Are you kidding me?  It was obvious to all of us who the better long term solution was for the team when the move was made.  Games are won and lost because of kickers.  Just look at the past three seasons if you need a refresher of how many games we lost due to our kicker sucking in crucial moments.

The only flaw I see in that line of thinking is I believe Rivera and probably the special teams staff had a large influence on which kicker we kept.

Hurney does not strike me as the type to make full blown decisions like that without input from his Head Coach. Could he have over ruled Rivera? Yes I assume so. In this case should he have? Yes he should have.

Gano also won us a lot of games. All kickers miss crucial kicks at some point. Butker had a key miss in the playoffs that cost the Chiefs.

While I’m skeptical about Hurney. It’s clear this was Rivera. His favoring of vets/talent evaluation (putting the best player on the field) and whole ‘go out on their own terms’ has screwed over the team on numerous occasions and is well documented, so much so it was regarding by many people as one of his biggest hinderances as a head coach.

No doubt in my mind Rivera would take Gano over Butker every time.

The tape we had on Butker *at the time* was limited to a rookie kicker in preseason.  Yes, he made kicks.  Guess what?  So did Slye.  This is why veteran kickers are valuable.  You know what they are.  If you looked at Slye over the first few games, he looked fantastic.  Now?  Not so much.

And, once mid-November hits, Kansas City is one of the hardest damn places to kick in the entire NFL.  That stadium of theirs is just a big wind box.

There's a whole laundry list of reasons I'd rank above making a bad call on a kicking situation.

One recent one that sticks out is the Short restructure. He's a declining, aging player with a huge contract. He's the exact type of player you DON'T kick the can down the road on to commit more future guaranteed money. Restructures save money on that cap in the short term by spreading  that bonus hit out at the massive cost of greatly reducing cap flexibility. Short is the type of player who should be being evaluated to be a cap casualty and Hurney's classic restructure just made that a much tougher pill to swallow.

It's the exact type of move that got him into cap hell his first go around.

I agree, this was a far more fireable offense, but equally as stupid.

It's very classic Hurney on both of these moves.  No regard for the future of the franchise, it's always only about the year in which you stand.

DG drafted Butker to take over for Gano so he would have a cheap, young kicker signed long term.  Hurney kept Gano, even though his contract was expiring, to satisfy Ron's insistence on veteran players.  KK and Trai's restructuring was all about this year, with no regard toward the teams future ability to maneuver if one of them got hurt, regressed, or we needed to rebuild.

Well, 1 of them got hurt, 1 of the regressed, and the team has to rebuild....Hurney didn't consider any of then when making that move.

Incompetent.
