Massive overpay for a non edge linebacker who does not impact the game on a high level.  Even if he was one of the best linebackers in the NFL, I wouldn't want to spend 13 million dollars on him given how much we're paying Luke.  You don't build an elite modern defense through heavy allocation of cap resources into linebackers.

This is actually Hurney's worst move in a decade

Indefensible

Actually it is pretty defensible. And we wouldn't be defensible in our history without the linebackers we've been blessed with. San Fran with Bowman and Willis, Ravens Suggs and Lewis, Bears Urlacher and the other guy who's name I forgot. But my point is everyone of those great defenses allocated their assets to the LB Corps because those are your QBS and RBS of your defense.  You no nothing about football if you can't see that we aren't the same team without Luke and Shaq.

i like Shaq but with with 3-4 linebackers with his size i guess we don't intend to stop another run ever

With 3-4, Shaq will go against OL a lot.  This movie by Hurney screams 2 things... 1) He does not understand 3-4 defense and 2) he will look to switch back to 4-3.

Shaq is a superb athlete. But he’s being wasted in this one gap dumpster fire of a defense. There are ways to utilize him in nickel, and they done a good job moving him around in the pass rush. I hope the next coach can find a way to put 50/59 back in a winning position pre-snap.

This is my issue. Shaq has never lived up to his potential. We paid him for his potential five years into his career. At some point, you are what you are on the football field. Pie in the sky potential has to stop impacting decisions.

More than anything it’s been scheme and coaching. If we let Shaq and Luke play where they are comfortable we have two elite (1 GOAT level) LBers who never have to leave the field

Well, that's done, can't say I'm a fan of the amount or the timing, just hoping for a good structure.

Hopefully we didn't pull the classic Hurney move on this one and backload the deal....but we all know he did, if he got his way.

If it's a 2 year $26M deal with no dead money on the books after 2, I'll be OK with it....don't love it, but not back breaking either.

Would have much preferred Bradberry, but the Panthers do love to spend big on LB's.

This is my major concern.  The money looks big right now, but might not look bad in a few months when the FA signings are done.

Buuutt, we have an unknown defensive scheme which will be determined by an unknown head coach and an unknown defensive coordinator.  It's not like whoever the coach is will be coming into a team that is a known 4-3 or 3-4 team and moves forward with that.

I don't mind them committing back to the 4-3 based on the strength of the personnel (in fact, that would be my prefernce), but that is a call for the new HC and DC to make.  Unfortunately, that means resigning/extending any DL or LB right now is a shot in the dark.

Ready.......Fire........Aim!

    • All signs point to legit. We’ve been way better than our record the last few years it’s just we’ve had brutal injury luck. Also I’ve watched nearly every game this year and 3 things have stood out to me even when healthy from early in the year to now: 1. Early on Lee had some brutal rotations and situational coaching but he’s improved a ton there. We lost some close ones early we should’ve won. Sure most our recent games have been blowouts but in close games we’ve improved a ton there. 2. Defense. Overall team defense has improved so much, it’s not just hot shooting winning games. This D is absolutely a real trend and sustainable. LaMelo in particular has gone from flat out bad defensively to above average. We have so much length we always should’ve been good defensively but it took time for guys to buy in and really hone in on it which they have.   3. Pretty much all our young guys have taken strides forward. Moose’s development as a passer has been insane, Miller is putting it all together to be an elite 3 tier scorer able to hit 3s, mid range and finish at the rim. LaMelo still some poor shot selection but has cut the turnovers considerably. Kon has been a great shooter all year but has steadily improved in other aspects of the game too.      It has definitely been surprising how quickly it all came together out of nowhere but really none of it surprises me. We’ve been building towards this for years now.
