Panthers "doing homework" on David Shaw

Mr. Scot

I wouldn't necessarily be opposed. Most top college programs benefit heavily from a massive overall talent advantage. That isn't necessarily the case at Stanford. You gotta be able to really coach to consistently be competitive there. Their recruiting classes are never elite and are usually in the good to decent range.

With that said, I also can't say I'd be shouting for joy over hiring a college football coach who went 4-8 this year.

Shaw's NFL resume' prior to joining Stanford...

Quality Control Assistant - Eagles (1997)
Quality Control Coach - Raiders (1998-2000)
Quarterback Coach - Raiders (2001)
Quarterback / Wide Receiver Coach - Ravens (2002-2004)
Wide Receiver Coach - Ravens (2005)
Passing Game Coordinator - Chargers (2006)

FYI: That final season in San Diego was the year Marty Schottenheimer went 14-2 but got fired anyway. Norv Turner took over the following season.

You can read his college coaching bio here (gostanford.com)

Don't know. Not that I saw in this article, though.

Speculation is that Rhule is interested in the Giants job, though apparently he just signed an extension on his current job. And there's general belief that Jerry Jones will throw his checkbook at either Lincoln Riley or Urban Meyer.

I think its the general belief that Tepper will also throw his checkbook at whomever he wants to get.  Teppers is equal to, if not bigger than Jerry's.

Checkbook, yeah.  Prestige, no.

The Cowboys are still considered the most prestigious coaching job in the NFL (which is amazing, given that you have to deal with Jerry Jones).

Oklahoma to Texas is also significantly less of a move than Oklahoma to Charlotte.

There are pros and cons both ways.

No college coaches. Please FFS.

Tepper and Snyder coming up in the same sentence is not a good thing either.

I don't mind college coaches if they have some previous NFL experience ala Pete Carroll or Tom Coughlin.  But if their experience is all college, then no.  The last coach to be successful with no nfl experience was Jimmy Johnson I believe.

Shaw would be interesting, but no to the Oklahoma guy.

I too prefer the NFL coaching vs. collegiate coaching track, but Shaw's experience in the NFL is well respected. He is frequently brought up in vacancies, but Shaw always remains loyal to Stanford and can't be pursuaded to leave the collegiate ranks.

He has won the Pac12 title 4 times and has some pretty stout winning percentages against a tough division that includes UW, Wazzou, & Oregon iin the North.

Combined with his knowledge of offenses, QBs and the link to CMC, he is a very realistic target that makes a lot of sense if we go the college route.

There's a reason organizations keep reaching out to him each offseason, only to be rebuffed.

I don't know why I think it would be funny to see Urban Meyer go to the Cowboys. Have a feeling he and Jerry Jones would be an interesting mix. Wonder if both of their egos can fit in the same conference room at the same time?

    • Madden has been in a bad state for well over a decade now but the best recent change they've made was making the rating distrubition harsher IMO. Whenever I try to play a MyLeague in the newer games pretty much every single one of your starters will be 85+ if you want to win a championship and you need probably 3 90+ guys. There's like zero seperation between the players on the court it seems like, someone ranked 85/99 should be a great player going off the percentage but instead that's essentially an average starter. Having a larger rating gap between the superstars and the JAGs highlights the difference in skill a lot better, whereas in 2K some team's 4th best defender can square up your 96 overall superstar thus causing the gameplay to feel rather homogenous.
    • I think, if the stars align, and the light comes on for XL and Metchie finds his way, and Brazzell's early returns are accurate--man, this team could be LOADED at WR.  Six will make it: TMac Coker XL Brazzell Metchie Tremayne Moore Horn
    • Personally, I think the Panthers would be a good place for a QB if he falls to maybe a 4th rounder or later.  I am not sure how they feel about the gambling and I am not sure of the details, but I think we have to plan for life without Bryce as much as we are planning for life with him.   I like Sorsby the player.  I see the Jets going after him if they have concerns about Klubnik-and they need competition for him anyway and a future replacement for Geno (who I think will suck back in NY).  Watch Atlanta, Cleveland, Indy, Miami, too, but Carolina is the team nobody is talking about, and Sorsby would be better than Kenny Pickett and maybe Haynes King is slated to always be the third QB/etc ST and Swiss Army knife--if he makes the team.   If Bryce falters, we need a QB who has potential, and Sorsby has it.  Pickett will never be a starter in this league, so his role is a #2.   I would be surprised if Morgan pulls the plug, but at worst he is a good backup and potential developmental starter.  To me-on paper--it makes too much sense.
