FO: The Carolina Panthers have the worst run defense DVOA of the century

"The worst run defenses are never as bad as the best run defenses are good, but this year also had one of the worst run defenses in DVOA history. Charlotte resident Scott Spratt has been lamenting this all season long in Audibles, and drawing attention to it whenever he recommends you play your running backs against the Carolina Panthers in his Sit and Start columns.  The Carolina Panthers allowed a league-worst 5.2 yards per attempt and 31 rushing touchdowns when the next-worst team was Jacksonville with 23. So the Carolina Panthers have the worst run defense DVOA of the century. It's interesting that most of the worst run defense DVOA ratings are from before the year 2000. This continues even if you go down to the top 20 or top 30."

I know Hurney is supposed to be the worst general manager in the history of sports, and we had a lot of injuries, but this roster isn't that different than it was the past few years.

Eric Washington might turn out to be the most incompetent DC in league history.

We were the worst team against the run of any team, this century.

The worst in 20 years.  Every scrub rb was getting career highs on us.  3-4 hasn’t worked and it could work we just don’t have the right personnel to pull it off.

We had the identical roster the year before (we only lost Mike Adams and the corpse of Julius Peppers, and actually added McCoy/Irvin/etc), and were only slightly below league average in rushing defense.

So it seems like it was mostly all scheme.

Only 2 years ago we were 5th in run defense DVOA with Wilks as DC.

seriously, toss some googly eyes on a box of rice crispys and it would have been better than Eric Washington.  Ron's REFUSAL to take away play calling duties from him directly lead to why he HAD to be fired.  Thing that pisses me off is why he decided to hire Wilks as DC in washington, but let fuging the clusterfug of Eric Washington stay as playcaller here.  There is rons problem in a nutshell, he can't admit when he's wrong even when its been proven time and time again.

    • I'd hold on to Walker - we have no OT depth at all. Freeling is a block of clay - all the tools are there and he appears to have a great attitude. He needs serious work on his technique to realise his potential though.
    • From my watch last night: They weren't trading out of 19 unless it was a daft offer once Freeling got there. They were clearly antsy to get Hunter - and Minnesota actually called to offer the trade down. They weren't trading out of the third round pick once Brazzell fell to it (and Canales would have been happy with him in the second round). They traded back a lot on Day 3 - even if Morgan 'Babe Ruth'd' it with Lee, Hecht and Wheatley; they clearly weren't the only guys they would have taken at those picks. I'm curious to know which player caused the reaction at the start of day 2 (Dan Morgan): "of course they'd pick him"
    • Watching this confirms that this staff and front office is super high on Monroe Freeling. I wouldn't be surprised if he's gotta a real chance to win the starting LT job in camp. If he does, we can look to flip Rasheed Walker to a contender desperate for tackle help.   As for Ickey I still really like him and wanna extend him but based on how the staff was talking about Freeling it might be time for ickey to start taking some practice sets at guard if he wants to stay here as we are gonna have to have figure out a solution for the contracts of Lewis and Hunt.  My preferred scenario for the Oline in 2027 is Freeling-Ickey-Hech-Lewis-Moton.
