I have no idea.  I can't make sense of it unless it had to do with control somehow?  Just seems out of character that he employed so many friends towards the end here instead of competent coaches, gets a new job and immediately hires a respected DC with previous HC experience immediately.  Just seems...  not like Ron.

With Rivera, it's not so much a case of whether he wants a competent assistant as it is whether or not he can recognize one.

I don't doubt that Ron genuinely believed Eric Washington could be a great defensive coordinator, just like he thought Shula was a great offensive mind and Richard Rodgers could do... something.

Maybe because he knows the coordinator won’t challenge him for the head coaching job in Washington right now.

Chudzinski was extremely underrated. he had problems, yes, but it was his first time ever as an OC. if he had several years to work out the kinks instead of being hotshotted into the Cleveland coaching graveyard he could have ended up much different

He was pretty brilliant in some aspects but he couldn’t seem to draw up the right play when it mattered. Maybe he could’ve gotten better.

yeah that type of thing is what i'm referring to with experience. he had an amazing playbook and had cam throwing for 400 yards a game, he just needed to figure out some situational things, particularly the redzone. i think he could have if given 2 more years as an oc.

What I want to know is where was this sort of hire for DC years ago? After McDermott all he did was promote from within. Now out of the gate he's bringing in Del Rio.

I know because I researched it at the time that there were better options available than Eric Washington.

But ya know, continuity...

    • i presented this in another thread. he throws better to the out breaking routes the wr run, but almost nothing to the inside. that is half the options on a wr route tree. How do you run an offense like that?  even the outbreaking routes he throws are moonballs, that allow the DBs to catch up unless the wr is wide open. he has to throw with a lot of anticipation becuase he doesnt have the arm strenght to get it there if he is a little late. thats probably why you see balls behind the wrs.
