Did the Patriots try to sabotage McDaniels?

I think owners don’t like that stunt McDaniels pulled with Indy

Possible, but with the Eric Reid signing, Tepper has already demonstrated a willingness to thumb his nose at his collective peers. He might have been leery of it, he might not have cared at all.  I'll tell you one thing that matters to me is how every time I look at Matt Rhule, how incredibly not Josh McDaniels he is.

This.

The two men have completely different vibes going on, night and day.

Rhule is the sort of boss most people would love to work for, McDaniels, not so much.

Much has been said, in this thread as well, about Tepper's so-called informed, logical, methodical, measured decision making. He has to be that person because he's a billionaire, right? I don't see him that way at all. Yes, he's always fully informed. And, yes, he's logical. But he's also willing to follow what just feels right and just make that decision, d@mn it. He has a set of brass balls on his desk, right? Why? Because he follows his gut against all odds at times and keeps coming out a winner. He had Rhul's full resume. I'm sure he had already talked with people who know and worked with Rhul. He knew Rhul's coaching philosophy. He had more than enough time to get that much done. What he needed to know was whether Rhul was pushed to that philosophy by others or did he truly believe and fully embrace what he coached. He got his answer at a dining room table in Waco. And we now have the head coach Tepper has been searching for.

I didn’t have a preference except anyone but him. Not really my place anyhow. This is a long term decision and I’m gone if Cam goes. I thought Rhule was as good as any, but all had their strong points. The only comment I ever made was “If Im Tepper, I make sure I sit down with Matt Rhule”. I never imagined it would happen.

It did seem.a little “rushed”. But who knows how long he’s been his choice. Ask me again in May and I might have a different point of view....lol.

I know Rhule was probably the choice of 1% of the fan base up until he was announced.

Can you do us all a favor and go ahead and be a Steelers fan? Big Alabama steeler fan right? your a joke

Besides, with the shenanigans McDaniels pulled last year and allowing the Patriots to pull his strings for years concerning head coaching interviews, well, that begs the question: what kind of man is Josh McDaniels?

A rich one. He is the highest paid coordinator by a lot.

He's actually really interesting. As far as I can gather, dude is a middle-aged guy who's got a successful business and a family.

And he's got thousands of posts - often very insightful re: football - on a fan board for a team he admittedly doesn't give a damn about, all because he's a superfan of the QB who played for his college team.

But he generally stays out of conversations about said QB, because of his bias on the matter.

That's a f*cking monastic level of objectivity. You've got to hand it to him.

Don't know about that. A lot of people who actually do work with McDaniels like him a lot. Their legendary OL Coach said he wouldn't have come out of retirement if it weren't for him.

I'm honestly less concerned about that though than I am about winning.

We've already had one guy who was super nice but didn't win enough games. I'd be really disappointed if Rhule turns out to be the same thing.

I'll admit, even if we still ultimately settled on Rhule, I do wish we had at least interviewed McDaniels.

I'd feel a lot better about the process if we had explored all the available options.

For what?

mcDaniels has done great w/Pats but he demolished a very competitive Broncos team while there. Then went running back to Daddy when it all blew the F up.

McCarthy on the other hand has a SB on his resumè. Likely the most qualified coach on the market for several reasons, and we interviewed him twice. Let him walk out of the building and go sign with Dallas.

we did our diligence and got our guy. McDaniels was just gonna play the field anyways and likely leave everybody hanging.

im glad we didn’t wait and I’m glad we got Rhule!

Our due diligence got us Matt Paradis too.

I certainly hope this turns out to be a good decision, but I don't have a lot of trust in the people who made it.

    • After Bountygate and the information that came out on the Saints owners shielding pedophile priests in New Orleans it will forever be the Saints numero uno for me. FUG THE SAINTS! I hope this is just the beginning of a long term period of suffering for that shitty organization run by even shittier human beings. #2.Pats/Belicheat #3. Falcons (Mike Vick years then Matt Ryan/Julio running it up) Ryan pooping his pants and 28-3 def makes my bad days always better just thinking of those. #4 Pretty much any franchise fan base thats obnoxious Steelers, Eagles, Bills, Jets, Giants, Cowboys, etc.
    • Thank God DM used that #8 pick on a bona fide WR1 and not some bum pass rushing prospect like Stewart or someone else. I believe Tet is legit WR1 material and going forward will be our long term answer at that position since we desperately were in need of one once they traded away DJ Moore.  Tet could possibly end up even being better long term than someone who I respect a ton as a WR in Moore. Evans has been a pleasant surprise and great TE/FB depth piece going forward who could make the most of his opportunities.  Any good offense worth a damn in the NFL has 3 TEs that can do multiple things and being scared by Ian Thomas play for years should makes us all appreciate what Evans is quietly doing as a ROOKIE at one of the hardest positions to learn at the pro level.  Keep cooking DM. This season is not over obviously but seeing some growth out of young talent finally is a breathe of fresh fuggin air for once.
    • Saw this show up in my new feed. Nice to see a couple of our rookies making it into the top 5 so far, even if it is a pff measure... From https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-top-15-rookies-week-9-2025 ... 4. TE Mitchell Evans, Carolina Panthers (78.7) Evans struggled in the Panthers’ tight win over the Packers, finishing with a 41.8 PFF overall grade — third worst among tight ends this week. He was not targeted in the game and played only one snap in pass protection. He did log 15 run-blocking snaps, and although he earned a 68.9 PFF run-blocking grade in zone looks (seven snaps), his 39.0 mark in gap schemes (second worst for the week) dragged him down to a 46.6 PFF run-blocking grade overall — sixth worst for the week. Despite seeing zero targets over his past two games, Evans still leads the Carolina tight end group with a 74.3 PFF receiving grade. He has caught all nine of his targets for 90 yards, six first downs and two touchdowns. Evans also leads the Panthers’ tight end group in PFF run-blocking grade (72.2). He has recorded a 20.5% positive play rate across 175 snaps.  5. WR Tetairoa McMillan, Carolina Panthers (78.6) McMillan had a better day against the Packers, recording four catches for 46 yards. Most of that production came in the first quarter via two 16-yard catches — one of which he snatched from Carrington Valentine’s hands, who was in perfect position to break up the pass. McMillan accounted for three first downs on the day, although Green Bay was able to limit his impact after the catch, holding him to 0.8 yards after the catch per reception. McMillan now has 41 catches for 558 yards — a top-15 mark. He is also tied for second with 19 explosive gains of 15-plus yards. Three of McMillan’s catches against the Packers came between the numbers, bringing him to 22 for 318 yards and 19 first downs (tied for second most) this season. He owns a 26.1% threat rate and a 76.6 PFF receiving grade between the numbers. He also ranks in the top 10 in explosive gains (10) and yards after the catch per reception (5.5) within that area of the field.
