The word from Rhule

Yea, he’ll be a big hit down here. As a religious man, I even caught myself slipping with an “Amen!”

With that being said, a lot of preachers blow hot air. It’s why I’ve tempered my excitement. I refuse to be impressed by words

Same here. I want to see it. I need to see it. He said a lot of right things, but for me to be sold, I need to see who he brings in as coaches, I need to see how he interacts with the players, FAs and draft picks, training camp and game day stuff.

The game day stuff is going to be the big thing. The initial game plan, player discipline, adjustments, how he acts in the press when things don't go right....these are the things I have to see and I need to see it on a professional level.

I think he'll motivate for sure, but will his speeches be enough 3 and 4 years from now? We'll see.

It’s honestly what I don’t like about him. Just comes across as fake to me. But that’s just me. Whenever he’s being asked questions he’s wayyy more personable

I don't believe he's fake. I don't doubt that he's a good man. There are too many people testifying to that.

I just don't care.

I'm not looking for him to be a pastor or a spiritual leader. I'm looking for him to be an NFL head football coach.

If he's good at that, then I'll be happy.

He's a silver tongued bullshit artist, who uses his charisma to swindle people (including the national media).  His greatest skill in life is selling himself/sales, and not actually coaching.  Would have been a fantastic politician.

Even the way he called the Giants back to try to get them to match our offer was pretty underhanded (although not surprising given the stakes)

Don't assume because Tepper has a specialized talent in markets that he's immune from making emotional decisions or being swayed by charisma.   Tepper himself admitted that his mood went to sh*t when the Panthers were losing, and he was riddled with anxiety having to make this head coaching decision.  Perfect prey for a smooth talker to quell your anxieties and reassure you he has all the answers.

Football is clearly a labor of love for Tepper, and something that takes him back to his childhood.   He's not using the same part of his brain when dealing when the Panthers as he does at Appaloosa.  Watch the video the Panthers uploaded of Tepper closing the deal with Rhule.  He seems desperate and anxious asking if 'they have a deal'.

I think Big Tep got swindled (and it wouldn't be the first time an incredibly wealthy billionaire owner got hoodwinked in professional sports).

Yeah this is where I’m at. If all you wanted was a fine human being, we already had that with Rivera. Now I’m not willing to look the other way on some things like cheating, but I do not need our next HC to be a paragon of virtue. If he is fine, as long as he WINS.

I agree with a lot of this except I don’t accept the premise that Rhule is swindling. That would only be true if he made statements he couldn’t or didn’t intend to back up. Using charisma to put your best foot forward is not inherently dishonest. If he is committed to things he said in the video, then there’s nothing dishonest about it.

I am concerned about Tepper’s seemingly overly emotional decision here. I agree this does not convey the impression this is a decision he’s coming at from a coldly rational place.

However when you sat that his greatest skill is selling himself and not coaching, his record at Temple and Baylor suggest he must know a thing or two about coaching. What remains to be seen is how well that transfers to the NFL. From what I’m hearing I think it’s possible his strengths might transfer well and also possible that they might not.

From where he's been not much will change in the interview process. Win, lose or tie he's going to give you fluff. The true religion will he be good enough at selling the fluff to win championships. Now that's the real question because God forgiveness is easy but Football forgiveness ain't.

Pretty much what any professional with multiple job offers does.

I too am a little put off by his preaching but not that.

Yeah, not only is this standard practice and not even remotely underhanded, but I always love the hypocrisy of how some businesses and managers don't want workers to do this, but the companies they run do it every single day in negotiating for products and services. Eff off with that noise.

I don't think you understand what really took place in the situation and how it went down.

Rhule is a good communicator, better than any of the other Panthers head coaches.

I think the players will buy into Rhule's approach as long as there is tangible progress made in the next two years.

After that, all the motivational talks in the world won't help a losing coach maintain control of the locker room.
