Cam/Trubisky trade?

While we're all poo posting terrible ideas for the future...

I wouldn't be shocked if something like this went down. It seems like we're hell-bent on going the full rebuild route and that's what Rhule has done in both of his college stops. From a physical tools perspective, Trubisky has everything Joe Brady should want in a QB to bring his offense to the NFL. So should Cam, but all the tea leaves seem to point toward the Panthers moving on from Cam. There's probably gonna be a lot of talk about the Panthers moving up to #1 to get Joe Burrow but the cost would probably be astronomical and the roster has a ton of holes that would have to go unaddressed for that to happen.

Meanwhile, in Chicago Nagy's seat has to be one of the warmest in the NFL going into next season. He was supposed to bring a KC style offense to Chicago and it's an understatement to say that hasn't quite worked out. Trubisky is getting a lot of the blame for that but in the games I've watched I don't think that's necessarily a completely fair assessment. If Nagy thinks Cam is the best bet to save his job then I'm sure he'd be all for getting him. Chicago as an overall team certainly seems a lot closer to compete for a SB than the Panthers and if they think Cam can get them over that hump I could absolutely see some sort of Cam for Trubisky trade going down. If Trubisky doesn't work out for the Panthers, there's a very good chance we'll be high in next year's draft and then we can look at options like Lawrence and Fields. In terms of cap hit, we'd save close to $10M.

I'm a huge Cam fan and I want to stick with Cam, but if you're moving on from Cam this is a move that could potentially make sense for both parties. The Bears make a hail mary effort to capitalize on a potential SB window while the Panthers get to kick the tires on a young QB who has similar physical tools to Joe Burrow with no long-term commitment.

Flame away.

Cam is staying.

Outside of that, I'd rather take another season with a hopefully growing Kyle Allen than what Trubisky could offer. At worst, we get a high draft pick with Allen or a level of sustainable mediocrity and big cap hits from Trubisky. At best we get a middling to okay QB we can win with. There's just no major upside to Mitch there.

I honestly haven't seen any, but I can understand them.

Player Comparison: Mitch Trubisky. What NFL team evaluators think is infinitely more important than my opinion on a player. Thus, I reached out to them to get their suggestions on a comparison for Burrow. One top executive said Russell Wilson for Burrow's style of play, but they acknowledged that Wilson's arm is much stronger than Burrow. As stated above, multiple sources said Burrow's skill set is in line with Andy Dalton or Derek Carr.

One director of college scouting said Ryan Tannehill was a solid comparison. They said that Burrow was a better decision-maker and fiery leader while Tannehill was a better runner and has a stronger arm.

The best comparison for Burrow might be Mitch Trubisky, as suggested by one director of college scouting. Both have good, but not elite, skill sets. In college, they showed accuracy as passers with the ability to be rhythm throwers who also had the mobility to make plays with their feet. Teams liked the intangibles on Trubisky as well, and both Burrow and Trubisky were 1-year wonders as players.

    • We don't know 1) where we're going to end up picking in the draft, or 2) what QBs will even declare for the draft, let alone which ones will be worthy of considering in the 1st round. That being said, I feel like our best bet may be to pursue a veteran with some upside that could be at worst a productive stop-gap until we can draft our actual QB of the future and, at best, another Baker/Darnold/Daniel Jones late bloomer redemption story. So... Mac Jones, anyone? The 49ers have him under contract for 2026 and will almost certainly entertain offers for him after his performance this season. Also consider that while many here have soured on Bryce Young, there are almost certainly still executives in the league that would take a shot on developing him as a former 1st overall pick. If there is one team - and one coach/scheme - that could get the most out of Bryce Young it's probably Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers. I wonder if they would be interested in a swap of former Alabama star QBs with 1st round pedigrees? You could argue which team might have to throw in some additional compensation, but it could be a good deal for both teams. The Panthers would get a QB who would be an immediate upgrade with potential to be that next Baker/Darnold/Daniel Jones redemption story and the 49ers get a backup to Brock Purdy with a skillset that Kyle Shanahan might just be uniquely qualified to tap into it. Any takers?
    • I think it's going to be very funny how poorly that goes.  I suspect you will see a lot of the Winston stans get pretty quiet after that game.
    • TBH, Bryce's physical limitations pale in comparison to his mental limitations and persistent mechanical issues.  Those were the real surprise. The physical limitations aren't a shock.
