Quarterback Coach Options

Barring any surprise announcements or new spots added, were down to one major position coach job remaining unfilled. It just so happens to be one of the most important ones, quarterback coach.

Three candidates have been interviewed, one has been speculated. Here are the choices as we know them:

Ben McAdoo: Former Packers quarterback coach, Giants OC and head coach. McAdoo is unpopular in New York because he benched Eli Manning, but a lesser-known story tells a slightly different tale. Back in 2017, McAdoo was pushing then Giants GM Jerry Reese to try and trade up to draft a quarterback of the future that he saw great potential in. Reese didn't think it was worth the effort and draft capital so the prospect ended up somewhere else. His name? Patrick Mahomes.

Scott Linehan: Former Dallas Cowboys OC and Saint Louis Rams head coach. Linehan was out of football last year after being fired by the Cowboys (some would say as a scapegoat). He had previously pushed out co-offensive coordinator Bill Callahan and taken over the full role himself. Prior to joining the Cowboys, Linehan's success as an offensive coordinator had gotten him a job as the Rams head coach. He's also interviewed for the job in New York where old buddy Jason Garrett is now the offensive coordinator.

Mike McCoy: Former Cardinals and Broncos OC and Chargers head coach. McCoy has an extensive history with the Panthers, having served on staff here from 2000 up through 2008 in various roles including quarterback coach and passing game coordinator. Like Linehan, success as an OC (in this case with the Broncos) got McCoy a head-coaching job but, also like Linehan, his results in that role were something less than stellar. His most recent stints as an OC haven't exactly been spectacular either.

Jim Caldwell: Former quarterback coach/assistant head coach for the Dolphins and Ravens, former head coach of the Lions and Colts. To be clear, Caldwell has not been reported to be connected in any way To the Panthers at this point other than his firing being mentioned by Jourdan Rodrigue. He has no connections to current Panther staff that I'm aware of but did spend about seven years in the Carolinas (1993 to 2000) as the head coach for Wake Forest.

So where are we at this point?

McAdoo was recently in Cleveland interviewing for their offensive coordinator spot. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo has speculated that the Panthers are looking in another direction - and McAdoo actively checking into other employment might support that - but that's not absolutely confirmed. McAdoo does have a connection to Tom Coughlin, which could mean something is Coughlin is still advising Matt Rhule.

Assuming Garafolo is correct and barring any further interviews with Caldwell or anyone else, it's sounds like the choice has come down to Linehan versus McCoy. Given those options, I'd probably take Linehan though given their familiarity, Marty Hurney might try to nudge Rhule toward McCoy. With that said, if he were more than just an object of speculation, I'd take Caldwell. He's got a pretty good track record of success with quarterbacks.

I doubt I'm the only one who'd like to see Caldwell interviewed/hired but I'm not holding my breath. Assuming he's not an option, which one of the remaining candidates would you get behind?

If that Mahomes story is true then that would be enough for me to hire McAdoo. Caldwell is underrated, but I wonder about his health. Both bring head coaching experience in the NFL, which is sorely needed on this staff IMHO. McCoy also has head coaching experience. McCoy also has some Panthers connection, but he would rank below McAdoo and also Caldwell.

It'd be a lateral move for anybody worth having so probably not.

If I recall correctly, Andy Reid denied somebody (the Eagles I think) permission to interview QB coach Mike Kafka. He's planning to move Kafka into Eric Bieniemy's role if he gets a head coaching gig.

Decision could already be made in there just waiting on announcing it. Rhule and company probably spent their time today watching and evaluating the Senior Bowl.

They all have head coaching experience.

They just all sucked at it.

They did deny the Eagles to opportunity to interview Kafka for their OC job because he wouldn’t be the primary playcaller. I don’t think our hire is from those teams either. They probably do have a good idea who it will be. I’m looking forward to the announcement of the entire staff.

I wouldn't say Caldwell sucked at it. Think he got a raw deal in Detroit with an incompetent front office. He wasn't the second coming of Chuck Knoll, but I would certainly be cool with him as our QB coach, and as a potential replacement for Brady in a few years when he takes a HC gig somewhere.
