Why do the Panthers, specifically Tepper, insist on keeping Hurney? — Jeff V.

Hurney is seriously respected in many football circles, where it is believed Tepper sought some advice/consulting as he began to turn his attention from the business side of the team to the football side in his second year of ownership.

For some reason, I got a few folks Mad Online for answering this one on Twitter a while back. My answer hasn’t changed: To me, the fact that Hurney has been retained while the entire football staff got replaced means that he presented a strategy of operations to Tepper, and Tepper thought it was solid and believed Hurney could execute it

The fact that Rhule maintained he had not spoken with ownership/front office staff much about an upcoming plan for Newton (if true) tells me that Newton was not a “draw” to taking the job, but also that his uncertain future was not a deterrent.

Let’s say for the sake of argument that this perspective from Gross is indeed how the new staff is leaning: To me, that still doesn’t necessarily mean Newton would be gone in 2020. He could be a “bridge” quarterback, as a younger prospect develops. Yet … would Newton want that for himself? Could he opt to hold out without a guarantee past this season? Or could the staff want to give said hypothetical young quarterback a little more breathing room, to learn about a leadership role without Newton?

We’re still in essentially the same spot as we have been for quite a while, in that we simply don’t know what will happen with Newton until March.

When you can bilk draft picks from a team because the GM doesn't understand team building, hell yes you are going to say everything in your power to keep that man a GM.

I can see Ozzie Newsome and Bill B over the past 15 years giving Hurney glowing reviews.

Do these cirlce spend their time losing also or are they the ones beating us in games and trades?

Hurney is garbage and i have no issues being loud about it. I call BS, his work speaks for itself and he is a giant turd in the punch bowl.

Was Jerry Richardson seriously respected in football circles?

I think Hurney's lack of employment by other NFL teams when he was first fired tells you all you need to know.

I imagine Tepper is keeping him around to make the transition to a new front office somewhat smoother but I pray to Sir Purr Hurney isn't given too much input in determining the long term vision.

RR might be right on the reason Hurney is being kept around. The more I think about the more it makes sense.

For the record, the article does also say she doesn't guarantee he stays GM after the draft.

Rodrigue was a pretty big Rivera supporter too. She's a good reporter overall, but apparently not so good when it comes to staying objective with people she covers.

It's also fairly well known that Marty feeds information to local sources. It's a good way to make people reluctant to say something bad about you.

Marty's background was never in personnel, it was in PR. It should be no surprise that what he does best is market himself. Unfortunately, Tepper doesn't seem smart enough to be able to see through the spin job and recognize what a sh-tty job he's doing.

Pretty sure he consulted with football guys not currently in the league, why would they lie about him?

Jeff Fisher got multiple jobs.

Yet Marty, a GM with 11 years experience at the time, wasn't even asked to be a low level scout.

    • The same folks crying about the OL right now were crying about it in 2023 too. We have tied up over 100 million dollars in two interior olinemen alone. We've invested multiple first and second round picks in the offense. We hired an offensive minded head coach. This is an offensive team. The offense needs to produce or people need to be replaced.
    • This is the same place that has ridiculed and blasted Caleb Williams at every opportunity he has his team sitting at 10-4 in the same NFC that the Panthers are competing in. And their division in the NFC North is as or more competitive as our division. Yet from the same people who have very high standards for Williams we get every excuse imaginable for the smallest starting QB in the league even when he and his team continue to disappoint when the pressure is on. You lot aren't any less inconsistent than anyone else.
    • The Panthers are 9th in cap spent on offense this year.  However next season is already a different story  The Panthers as it stands right now will be 18th in cap spent on offense and 8th in cap spent on defense  The Panthers are currently set to spend more on defense next year than they are on offense this season Guys like Jaycee and Moehrig cap numbers take a big jump. Wharton has a massive cap hit   Jaycee Moehrig and Wharton in 2025 The same 3 in 2026 So this same defense as it stands right now will cost more in 2026 than this offense does right now… Got anything else you want to try?
