You act like its personal.  I guess my suggestion of trading Luke to help the rebuild, before Luke bowed out, would have also been "turning" on him?  Belicik won a handful of Super Bowls by turning on guys I guess.  I want to win games, if Cam is the best option, fine.  My thinking is that we lack waaay more than we did last season at this point and the best way to get where we want to be is by using our best as trade chips.  Similar to a Cy Young winning pitcher on a bad team.  They are not turning on them, this is silly

You think a Marty Hurney drafted 3rd round rookie would be better for this franchise than Cam Newton? Because that is likely all we'd get for Cam at this point and maybe a 6th or a 7th. Highly doubtful we'd get as high as a 2nd rounder.

He feels he will be healthy to play and wants to be here. What do we have to lose? Our offense could be pretty nasty next year if Cam can still play. You dont dump franchise quarterbacks like that because there is no telling when your opportunity is going to be to draft another one. Moves like that set your team back for MULTIPLE years, and even if you do get your "guy" there's just no guarantee that he is going to be the one that is able to get it done. Will he have the work ethic? How much does he love the game? The community? We've seen Cam at his absolute best and its definitely good enough to win a superbowl(s) with. No one hates losing more than Cam. No. One. We POTENTIALLY have that on the roster RIGHT NOW. Why would we move on from that?

And if it fails? Well guess what we will likely have a top 5 pick in that event and he will be a FA the following year. So again what do we really have to lose with allowing Cam to play out his contract?

Some guys on here think Cam could win us 8 games with UNCC's team filling out the squad.

Except it doesn't have to be about winning a ton of games next year even with Cam. As long as our offense is explosive and we're trending in the right direction that's all we really need the first season. If we make the playoffs that's definitely a bonus

I have no idea what's going to happen but when posters like this make threads like this it nearly always backfires on them.

Yes.  Until Cam gets one of those Marty Hurney extensions--which I do not see in the cards---there is no reason to speculate this is more than a one-year "one and done".  I would not rule out drafting a QB either--or they could think they need to coach up Grier this season and then draft a QB in 2021.  Either way, Marty got burned giving DelHomme a contract after Tommy John surgery---I doubt Cam sees any offers until he has strung together 16 games at a high level.  It will be interesting to see what they do then

Pay him.

Seriously, I have my doubts about his body holding up but I’m crossing my fingers. If he stays healthy and is effective for 16 games, you don’t seriously think they let him walk, do you?

Nobody ever let a healthy effective franchise qb walk away in their prime cause he didn’t fit their system or was too expensive.

That is a big IF.  There is no reason to pay him now.  He has shown his desire to stay in Charlotte and prove it to himself and the league.

About the "in their prime" comment.  30-31 is "prime" for a QB, but Cam's style of play makes him hard to gauge.  He has taken a beating.  Remember those dives into the endzone?  Remember when he lowered his shoulder and bulldozed over a linebacker?  Oh how we cheered then.  It takes its toll.  Has his body recovered?  Maybe--but he is saying now what he said last year. Crossing fingers is right--it would be a huge gamble.   I just think they will build around a young guy because this is a long-term mindset.  Who knows?

Oh I’m not advocating pay him now. No no no. I have those same doubts. Reread what I wrote. I’m only in favor of paying him if he can stay healthy and effective for 16. I’m still very much concerned about all those hits, but I did find something recently that made me feel better about Cam’s long term prospects. I looked up a number of running qb’s from the past and examined specifically their age and rushing yards. It appears that while running qbs have to dial back the running a lot after 30, they can still be effective passers into their mid 30’s

Yeah, we are basically in agreement--the risk of the 2021 contract is the issue--what does 2020 tell us about Cam.  There are some running QBs who can still be effective passers in their mid 30s--here is my take on that:

Cam has never had a great OL--specifically OTs.  He had Gross for a while, but Remmers?  M Kalil?  etc.  Cam is good when he drops, plants, and throws.  When he does not (and the reason for that could be a bad read or no separation, etc) he loses his feet (technique) and tends to throw high.  He is a great athlete, so running has always been his escape hatch--it is hard to rewire that mindset.   If the intent is to keep Cam, then give him a stud OL now to protect him and one more WR.   I am getting ready to start a thread on the WRs in this draft--it is sick how deep it is.

When Cam is a run threat, he is more effective because he sees fewer blitzes.  If he loses that, then what makes him special?  That is why I suggest the OL and a WR.  He needs to drop, plant, and throw.  Watch some video--he is deadly in that situation.  When he gets moved off the mark he struggles.  So with an OL and some dangerous WRs---he could become that QB.  My biggest concern is how quickly he reads defenses--still is.  He has always relied on his cannon to make up for mental hesitation (obviously this is my opinion because nobody knows what he sees or thinks).  A solid 2020 and a smart contract--no issues.  However, I have doubts about his health.  I hurt after playing college football---I can't imagine what these guys go through.

For a numbers guy, that doesn't rely on feelings.  Its amazing how many times straight up facts disagree with your narrative.

That dude has wanted Cam gone since 2012.  Take anything he says with a boulder of salt.

Just another Huddle poster who "wants to win games" but was willing to go 2-30 over two seasons to get Luck and now wants to tank again to get the latest anointed one in Trevor Lawrence.
