BREAKING NEWS: David Tepper speaks on Cam Newton status with Panthers

If you are in a full rebuild as some suggest, you let Cam walk.  Bringing him back--if healthy--probably wins 3 more games for your team (guess, and an example).  If the Panthers sans Cam wins 2 games, for example, the Panthers with Cam win 5.

As you can see from this year's draft--5 wins may take you out of the running for a top QB---if that is the goal.

I do not think it is.  However, it comes down to this:  David Tepper does not seem to think Cam Newton is the QB to rebuild around.  That is a speculation--based on what is NOT being said.

And for those who think you are going to laugh in the faces of people wanting Cam to move on, understand this:  If he returns and can't get the job done AGAIN, he will have cost the season ticket holders thousands of dollars and three losing seasons.  He will have been hurt about 75% of the time under his current contract.  We will be in the same boat next year, but having lost a season.  Cam will have earned $80m during that time--the season ticket holder will have spent about $10-20K during that time.  So let's not make everything about Cam being the only victim.   It is business.  If Tepper is serious about the new stadium, he must get serious about a winning team.  It is all tied together.

So if you are wrong about Cam--the fans lose another season and millions of dollars in ticket prices.

This ain't 2015.  And those of you who are comparing Cam's injury to Drew Brees' injury--for every recovered shoulder I can show you 10 that did not.  One case does not prove anything.  If Cam is healthy, the risk of injury is still high based on his age and playing style.  Do your research on running QBs in the NFL and see how long they lasted.  Yes, you can blame a poor offensive line and bad drafting (or no drafting), but do not blame the fans who are sick of mediocrity.  And as great as Cam is as an athlete, the team has been mediocre since 2011.  Look it up. Not blaming Cam, but if you can't win consistently when he is in his prime, healthy, and inexpensive, do not expect to suddenly start winning when he is banged up, old, and expensive.  Tepper knows that.

People expecting a big year are going to be disappointed. We're a season away from having what we need to do that.

To clarify, I'm talking record-wise. I want Cam back more than probably anyone but a couple others here. That said, I've kind of accepted I can't control the front office's decision-making and have subsequently resigned myself to the idea I'm gonna hear he's traded at some point in the offseason.

Gonna be cool with Cam is healthy in March and we ball out next season. I think some of the moves that we’re making with the roster is a lot of fat trimming that should’ve been done back a few years ago

And what shall we call this Disney Movie?  If you are interpreting the non-statements (?) that seems like it is not going to happen in the real world.

I will be a liar if I said what’s going to happen because I really don’t know. I just don’t want to go through another losing season no matter who is the QB. As some suggested, I will not sit through a season to purposely tank to get a QB that may very well be a bust. I do like Trevor with that being said. I try not to think that teams deliberately lose games to move up in a draft. Like does a coach go and say “make it entertaining but lose “. I just don’t think that happens but what do I know

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
