This is why you don't just throw money at FAs.   I think the Colts were smoking something when they gave that $13 million contract to Funchess.  I mean some serious authentic south of the boarder stuff that would even blow Tommy Chong's mind.

They also had a shitload of cap space, so that $13 mil was a drop in the bucket.

We shouldn't get too cute signing up a bunch of cheap free agents to the point we screw ourselves out of prime compensatory picks. Let's say we are eligible for a 3rd, 4th, and 2 5ths for Bradberry, GVR, Boston and Addison, which seems fairly realistic if not a bit conservative. If we sign four 1.5 million dollar free agents as camp bodies/depth, we end up with nothing. We need to prioritize players cut by their teams, which doesn't count against the comp pick formula, as well as draft picks and undrafted free agents. If we get good value on a free agent we expect to contribute, it would probably be worth giving up one of our 5th round comp picks, but these are the kinds of things we need to factor in.

I'm not sure exactly how many players we have on the team atm, but we are going to have to sign a lot of FAs just to fill the roster

Yup and people get stupid when they have some disposable cash. A sign of a unwise deal: would you have paid 'x' amount of money to a tier-2 FA coming off one of their worst seasons if you had 20-30% less cap space at the start of FA?  No.  It's akin to getting your tax refund check and going to shop for a Mercedes not even looking for a sale.  This year though you got bumped up a tax bracket and are getting less than normal.  Still shopping for that Mercedes and if so, are you at least going to wait for a sale?

Same principle. People tend to make poor bang-for-your-buck decisions when they feel they have deep pockets.

To be fair he got hurt and only played one game. Once Luck retired, the team’s focus shifted.

Agreed, but even when the deal was initially made, a lot of people were left scratching their heads.  The things that came down the road later only magnified the questionable deal.  Back to my earlier point, teams with a great deal of cap space tend to overpay FAs.  If the Colts only had half of the cap space, they still may have had some interest in Funchess, but I highly doubt they would have given him the same amount of money.  Again, deep pockets tend to spend money in FA somewhat carelessly just because they can.

We are in line to get several compensatory picks in 2021 and I hope Marty and Co. have the foresight to mind their P's and Q's during this free agency run.

I really think someone like DJ Reader, who turns only 26 this summer would be a great pick-up....especially if we can land Okudah or Simmons in the draft. However, we have the potential to load up on comp draft picks next year and set ourselves up nicely to move around or add players in the 2021 draft.

What are the rules on UDFAs? Can we just get as many as we want? Surely they don’t have any bearing on comp picks.

Undrafted FAs signed following the draft have zero impact on comp picks.  I don't think there is a limit, but you don't want 20+ of them either.  That's a sign of a team in serious trouble. I think I remember seeing as high as 15 one season here, usually 10-12 on average.

It wouldnt shock me if the panthers sign 20 of them this year. Near total new coaching staff, low cap space, and too many holes is a perfect mix for signing a huge group. Dave didnt like to sign a huge group, mainly cause they took too long to get up to speed and need too much baby sitting. Coaching have limits now and rookies must learn faster. It brings down groups if 4 UDFAs in one are struggling. Need to teach a skill/formation once and move on to the next thing.

Id like to see Herniay spend more on UDFAs, he never gives out signing bonuses above 10k. Panthers needs are too many, be super aggressive on this and fill some holes, rather than worry about spending 20k too much.
