He never quite seemed the same after those two back to back games with Denver and week one the next year. Really took a big psychological toll.

Still pissed Gano missed that field goal

Losing to Denver that first game of the 2016 season was the worst thing that could have happened to that team (besides losing the SB the game before obviously). The whole season was a wash after the first damn game. It was obvious Cam and the whole team was never the same.

Never lived up to his potential.  Sad he could have been so much better.  Good QB but not a Great.

I would say that maybe he did live up to his potential. I mean, he almost helped this franchise win a Super Bowl with a team that absolutely NO ONE expected to be there! Not to mention several winning seasons! He was voted the best player in the NFL by the players themselves! Sure, he didn't get a ring, but I really can't blame him for that.

If Newton would sign in Miami, it would be as a bridge quarterback/mentor to whomever they select in the NFL Draft. And while he’s certainly a better player than the guy they currently have in place to do that job, he’s probably not a better personality fit. Put simply, Newton marches to the beat of his own drum.

“Eh, not much of a mentor,” was how one person who knows Newton well put it.

Zero draft picks for Cam, Smitty, and Peppers lol

We probably weren't going to get any picks for Cam or Smitty anyway. People may not want to hear that, but it's true! Relevant injuries and age don't make for picks!

Pure speculation. The Panthers lost any leverage when they announced the Bridgewater signing. That's been flown around by pundits that's been doing this for awhile since the notion of signing Bridgewater became a reality. C'mon guy.

Word was they released an Instagram tribute, but other than that having Tepper and Rhule say nothing is probably gonna irk fans.

You know next press conference they are going to be grilled. You know the first couple loses(if the NFL happens this season) rhule is gonna be drug through the mud and if cam goes somewhere and balls out... while we suck? Think about the media.

Care to come get your serving of crow, ATL-ien? I had hoped you were right about Cam staying put, and believed you were, but this makes it official. It’s over in Carolina for Cam.

That dude is gone. I think he deleted his account or was banned.

Most people that were being realistic knew this was going to happen.  There is more to this than just injuries, someone else mentioned CTE in another thread and I think that’s a legit thought.  Cam ain’t right mentally or physically right now.  Won’t surprise me if he doesn’t play again.

Interesting bit from the athletic:

When did you feel a separation between the Panthers and Cam was inevitable?

Joe Person: I started thinking a split was inevitable when the Panthers began their tailspin last season and Ron Rivera was fired. Maybe even before that — when it was clear Cam wasn’t coming back from his foot injury and would need surgery.

I remember speaking to someone from Cam’s camp — and I don’t even think Rivera had been fired yet, but the writing was on the wall. Anyway, this person predicted then that Cam wouldn’t be back, saying a new coach would want his own quarterback. It’s too bad it had to end this way, with Cam losing his last eight starts and then the “gave him permission to seek a trade” line. But this day has been coming for a while.

Jourdan Rodrigue: Something felt odd to me — just deeply unsettling — when I watched the play-call at the end of the Tampa Bay game in Week 2. At the goal line, Norv Turner and Rivera opted to take the ball out of Newton’s hands — a situation where Newton had previously been one of the most effective players in history. Something just didn’t feel right about that.

As the Lisfranc injury got more ambiguous, I tried to just shut up and listen — and muttering in the background suggested that the Panthers were ready to move on.
