My Carolina Panther Mock Draft

Verge

Recommended Posts

A few people were asking me to do this, so I guess I will give it a shot. I will likely have my full two round mock draft posted here in the next week or so. From my understandings this is Matt Rhule's draft, obviously Hurney has input, but this is Rhule's roster to build, and I think there is something to say for that. Emphasis of this draft is obviously to build up this defense, go line early, and fill the holes as they come based on talent.

Round 1, pick 7: Derrick Brown, DT, AUB
So full stop, I 100% think this could be Simmons if he is there, but right now I don't foresee that happening and ultimately this could come down to preference between Kinlaw and Brown. I obviously have Brown as the higher ranked player, and I think justifiably so, most people do, but it is close and Kinlaw and Brown do very different things. If you need a sneak preview on what Brown can do, just watch him vs LSU as he wrecks that offensive line. Gives me Suh type vibes and immediately upgrades the defensive line.

Round 2, pick 38: Josh Uche, DE, MICH
Rhule and Frost's mindset is that you win upfront, and that will be the primary focus of these early picks I think. Uche is a pure speed rusher who needs a little bit of development, envision him in a Brian Burns type role at first until he can fill out his body to anchor opposite of Burns. He does have a tendency to get swallowed up in the run game, but once that frame is built up and he is molded into more of a 4-3 end that should mitigate a lot of the holes in his game. Very similar to Brian Burns. Think this could be the safety Dugger as well, but feel like the line is a priority.

Rd 3, pick 69 (ayy): Amik Robertson, CB, LT
More defense! I have to tell you, if Amik was a few inches taller, he would be a lock for a top 15 pick. Fundamentally sound in every aspect of the game, with explosive execution, and high IQ plays constantly. Obviously 5'8 (generous) is short for an outside corner, but it never comes up in tape and he is definitely not afraid of bigger receivers, and routinely attacks the ball.

Rd 4, pick 113: Kevin Dotson, G, LALAF
Think we may end up trading up to target him or some other interior offensive lineman here, but Dotson fits the bill here. Thought the right side of that offensive line was dominant and Dotson was a big reason why. Dotson would be an instant starter for us, and if we are able to get him in the fourth, more power to us.

Rd 5, pick 148: Thaddeus Moss, TE, LSU
Brady gets his tight end, and our Y guy. Temper expectations on him starting right away, needs to develop his blocking and frame. Eventual starter.

Rd 5, pick 152: Justin Strnad, LB, WF
Back to defense, we get a depth linebacker here that has starting potential. Speedy linebacker who will excel in special teams and hopefully develop into a run a chase LB.

Rd 6, pick 184: Chris Williamson, CB, MIN:
We get an aggressive corner to compete in the nickel role. Injuries and chunk plays drop him in this range.

Rd 7, pick 221: Jacob Knipp, QB, NCO:
We get a developmental guy to come in and compete for the backup role. Intriguing tools with tremendous upside, injuries ruined his career.

Looks like a solid draft to me. I would assume Grier would be the odd man out if we get Knipp. Also I hope we pick up a vet CB, because our secondary would still be a pretty big weakness. I’m guessing we are waiting until after the draft to d sad solidify our roster? Anyway if we could snag a starting OG in the 4th and Moss in the 5th, I will be very happy!

I can't see them taking a developmental QB is a very shorten training period. He will get no work and a roster spot will be needed. I can see a cheap vet signing as the back up and Grier possibly kept.

I also would love to see Simmons as the pick but he will be gone. Brown or Okudah are the 3 we pick from if all 3 are gone, we fall back and get an extra pick.

- Brown is 100% my guy if we stay at 7 (but ive got a hunch, a feeling, and heard some things that we may like Kinlaw more.

- I like Uche, just not for ua.  Kid is a true 3-4 OLB. And we're going to a 4-3.

- Amik I like as a Nickel prospect

- Dotson that late would be a steal

- im not so certain they take another QB in the draft even that late with 3 on the roster currently (one being a 3rd rounder last year)

nice draft.

I think if Simmons is there, he is the pick.  Otherwise, I hope they trade back a few spots with the Jets or Cleveland and pick up an extra third.  This should allow us to take advantage of this deep WR draft.  If they can do this, then we could still probably get one of the DTs we like plus...

10/11. One of Brown/Kinlaw DT

38. one of Agbinoghere/Hall CB

69. One of Hennesay/Cushenbery,/Ruiz/Biadasz C/G

68/74. Pittman or Proche WR

113. One of Alton Robinson DE / Lynch DT

148. One of Logan Wilson LB/ Lynch DT / Moss TE / Strnad LB

152. see 148.

184. OL/S (special teams)

221. Knipp QB

Not a big fan.. But that's just my opinion..

I would rather get a "bigger" CB prospect in the 2nd round .. Especially since we have to see Julio, Evan's and Mike Thomas 6 games a year and all of them are 6'3 and above...

Would look at edge player later in the 4th or 5th round.  Since we already have atleast 5 options already on the roster...

I would be looking for more of a C/G guy in the 3rd or 4th round.. Rather then a straight up OG..

I like Thad and Strand ..

Finally I would grab a guy who atleast can compete for a special teams role instead of another QB taking away reps... If we need another camp arm we could grab a undrafted guy..

Just my 2 cents...

This is closer to my idea ..  Without the Wr or development QB...

Good job. I believe it will be DT also given the drop off after the first couple

I don’t feel good about the panthers lbs, at all but a good line helps with that...that’s what I tell myself

we will see how it falls come apr 23
