Marty Hurney defends medical staff over Panthers handling of Cam Newton

if you want to blame anyone blame Rivera for playing him knowing he was hurt or blame Cam for hiding how bad his shoulder was .  He played when he couldn't throw a 20 yard pass .  That did not fall on Hurney or Tepper .  Tepper made a business decision to let Cam go .  Only time will tell if it was the right one .

Even in, can’t recall the show name, where they followed the team for a year. You see in the show Tepper telling Ron to pull Cam because he is hurt and can’t play.

I don’t really care about the whole injury thing cause Hurney can’t control that, but his lack of support for Cam’s first couple of seasons was nightmarish

I agree, but I put Ron’s way too preference on defense for that as well. The whole oline and offensive supporting cast for that matter.

2011 support

Steve Smith, Greg Olsen, Jeremy Shockey, Deangelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, Best Oline he ever had as a panther.

2012 support

Steve Smith, Lafell, Greg Olsen, Deangelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, 2nd best Oline he ever had.

The support Cam had his first 2 seasons far out weighed any support Gettleman ever gave him.

This is why you pay backups. RR was saying over and over Cam gave us the best chance to win even tho it was clear to fans and DCs he could not throw over 20 yrds, that was bs why pay players if you are not going to use them? Cam and RR are at fault both didnt want to face the truth and it ended up costting both there job. Lots of fans where saying it as it was happing, they are playing for the short term future be damn...

I mean...Cam himself acknowledged that he has lied to the coaching staff about his injuries.

This is such a tired narrative. All athletes with Cam’s level of competitiveness downplay injuries because they don’t want to let down their teammates. It’s the coaches and staff’s responsibility to recognize when there’s a problem. Especially when even we fans can see it while watching from home.

Your making my point, outside of Olsen those guys were already here. Also Lafell? lol

I’m not exonerating Gettleman of blame either

It doesn't matter if they were here or not, it was support, and Lafell was a fine #2 WR.

Hurney was in a postion of power as 2017 to 2019 unfolded with Cam. He shares in some blame, just like the coaching staff, the medical staff and Cam himself. You can allot that blame how you want but it's there.

If the fans can see it on TV than the people who get paid to make the football happen should too. It was handled poorly, repeatedly. The fact that is was so stupid and poorly handled does leave a taint to all involved, including Hurney. Not a fan of Hunrey but his part was a lot smaller than the coaches and medical staff in this issue. They fugged up big time.

Again, what do you expect for him to say? Think he is going to throw a bunch of people he works with under the bus while he still isn’t sure if he is going to have a job?

the fact that the Panthers were completely fine with going into An NFL season with Byron Bell and whatever that dudes name was who was a converted TE from UCLA tells you all you need to know about the franchise. I know those were DG decisions but still.

    • I'd hold on to Walker - we have no OT depth at all. Freeling is a block of clay - all the tools are there and he appears to have a great attitude. He needs serious work on his technique to realise his potential though.
    • From my watch last night: They weren't trading out of 19 unless it was a daft offer once Freeling got there. They were clearly antsy to get Hunter - and Minnesota actually called to offer the trade down. They weren't trading out of the third round pick once Brazzell fell to it (and Canales would have been happy with him in the second round). They traded back a lot on Day 3 - even if Morgan 'Babe Ruth'd' it with Lee, Hecht and Wheatley; they clearly weren't the only guys they would have taken at those picks. I'm curious to know which player caused the reaction at the start of day 2 (Dan Morgan): "of course they'd pick him"
    • Watching this confirms that this staff and front office is super high on Monroe Freeling. I wouldn't be surprised if he's gotta a real chance to win the starting LT job in camp. If he does, we can look to flip Rasheed Walker to a contender desperate for tackle help.   As for Ickey I still really like him and wanna extend him but based on how the staff was talking about Freeling it might be time for ickey to start taking some practice sets at guard if he wants to stay here as we are gonna have to have figure out a solution for the contracts of Lewis and Hunt.  My preferred scenario for the Oline in 2027 is Freeling-Ickey-Hech-Lewis-Moton.
