You don't need to use hindsight, it was plain as day when it happened.

Extending an off ball linbacker to a top contract before you even know what defense you are going to run is next level dumbassery.

We gotta get that LB paid and now!!!!!.....what about our best O lineman who is still young and healthy?....don't have time for that, I'm just trying to assemble the best 53 I can......Well, what about Bradberry instead of Shaq?  He plays the much harder position to fill, and have you looked at our division?.....The Carolina Panthers are about Linebackers and RunningBacks.....GOT IT!!!@22@!!!!

Who was our best young O-lineman who was still young and healthy? Just checking, because I didn't see one. Moton was fair to middling at best last year and he was the best of the bunch, which is no real praise.

Extension talks should have started with Moton last season, and at the very least, this past offseason.

Hurney couldn't be worried with that though, as he was trying to "put together the very best 53 man roster" in this dumpster fire.

Had we signed him this past offseason, we would have gotten his prime, and been done with the contract before he turned 30/31.

We need offensive linemen bad, and Moton is a good one, not great, but good...put some legit talent around him and he is very good.

Dumb Team.

Instead we decided to spend money one two positions that have some of the lowest impacts on winning in the NFL. A standard Hurney move.

Both Tre's and Shaq's contracts were inevitable with all the change. With Luke retiring what did we have beside Shaq? Clearly Whitehead isn't the answer and we have Carter for the other position. A lot of Jags. So Shaq was the veteran we needed and he wasn't going to stay for free.  Tre is much the same. He isn't great as a player because he is undisciplined but he is a leader of the secondary and guys like Jackson have talent but is he a leader? I don't know. But some guys you sign for potential or athleticism, other guys you sign for leadership and decent skills. Is Tre a long term solution? I hope we can do better. And this coaching staff can improve the defense

I admit I like veterans over rookies and like having leaders on the youngest defense in the league. Let's be real here, if you would have gotten rid of both of them do you really think we could have done better in this environment and situation where you couldn't even bring guys in for physicals? Teams paid their own because that is who they had and in our case we had so.many new guys and rookies we needed to sign a few veterans at key places. What part of that is a problem?

Well it isn't like we assembled a fantastic team and in Shaq's case it is a contract we will be dealing with for far too long. We could have probably done better than Tre and wouldn't be saddled with another overpaid underperformer in Shaq.

I don't even think Shaq is trash but part of this rebuild needs to be avoiding the same mistakes we have made for years that got us where we are now.

Ive heard they had early talks with Moton, Bradberry, and Samuel. Bradberry and his team stood firm and he bet on himself. Herniay didnt give the extra 2-3 million, then the price went where Smarty Marty was going to need 6 million more. Hes gone and making more than he asked form Marty. Samuel and Moton are in that spot of not being elite and not being awful. Young and showed flashes, it seems most teams are scared to death about paying those types with the incoming convid capped year in 2021. The cap may lose 30 million and be at 175 million. Paying Samuel and Moton 10 million per eats away at that reduced cap.

I dont understand why any good/great player signs with a team BEFORE free agency. Id wait to see what other team are truly offering. Each class is rather bad, honestly the cuts seem to be better.

Don't need to rewind at all.  It was dead obvious at the time that Shaq wasn't worth what he was given.  Too many excuses . . . he's in TD's shadow, he's in Luke's shadow.  No.  That's not it at all.  Shaq is average.  And you know what?  That's ok if you're getting paid reasonably.  Next year, Shaq is getting Bobby Wagner money!  The dude ain't no Bobby Wagner.  Shaq at 28 million over four seasons?  Sure, why not.

I was never a Tre Boston fan.  Didn't like him the first time he was here, don't like him here now.  Dude has Earl Thomas attitude but nothing that even resembles that level of ability.

Not even Hurney is stupid enough to pay Samuel $10M. Samuel will be looking for a prove it deal from someone.

Mountains out of molehills. We have 50 million in cap space or some such next year. Things are looking up. Lots of talent and potential. I don't get all the gloom and doom and bitching. I really don't.

Incorrect. We are projected to have roughly $23.5-27 mil in cap space due to some of the same boneheaded moves as throwing money at a mid-level LB(due $14.1 mil in 2021). That's called repeating the mistakes of the past, which I guess if you have Hurney Stockholm Syndrome, you'd call "gloom and doom and bitching."

    • FLA showed everyone it’s not about superstars. they bullied the best line in the NHL into obscurity. they played hard, were in the right positions, and ran over everything that got in their way.
    • That’s really not what you said and when I even expressed doubt as to your intentions with the post you doubled down and remained unclear on whether you were trying to drag Dean Smith for whatever reason. You just got the facts wrong, which if you don’t follow the local college programs like you say then maybe you just were mistaken and thought Smith didn’t win championships or have legit superstars, and that is ok, but you just doubled down when my first post was more corrective than anything. I’m not sure what you expect posting objectively false things like “RBA has a lot of wins with nothing to show for it like Dean Smith” (paraphrasing) on a message board with plenty of UNC fans. I’m not taking it as a personal affront, we can agree to disagree, Dean Smith’s legacy fortunately will not be affected by this conversation. Screw the (Florida) Panthers?
    • Bring in the free agents and trades.  Florida is the best team and unless Tulsky makes it happen, it’s more of the same…which isn’t bad…but it’s time to win a goddamn cup.
