Marty Hurney would have drafted Herbert

At the time I thought we were going to take Herbert and I wanted Hurney to pull the trigger. I also had a feeling that our Panther luck would result in a run on QBs before we picked. When the QBs flew of the board I wanted to trade down, and I didn't want to draft Brown. If you dig up the draft thread you'll see me clamoring for Herbert to fall, and when I wasn't big on Brown it really pissed the other fans off.

Ultimately I just want a great QB, and it's damn near impossible to tell which QBs will achieve greatness, and which will flop. Still we need to shoot our shot and see what happens. We were robbed of that opportunity in the last draft because we won a few totally meaningless games that everyone has already forgotten about. We need to lose out this season, 0-16, and either draft Lawrence, or trade down for a kings ransom. Any win this season harms our future, and I could care about the feelings of what few fans remain and their wanting to win some games. No. I rooting for this team to loose from here on out.

If nothing else, it provides further evidence that Hurney doesn’t make rogue decisions without heavy input from his coaching staff.

no it doesn't.  herbert was gone when we picked.  it says nothing at all about that.  coach wanted to trade down.  hurney wanted brown. its the opposite of what you got out of it

I have been sort of checked out this offseason for various reasons. Was there an article or anything that stated Rhule wanted to trade down vs taking Brown?

i haven't been reading articles.  there are multiple informed posters who have been talking about it in a few threads over the last week or so - so i'm assuming its correct.

    • He makes a good point about Wallace.  In fairness to Wallace it is hard to play your position as freely as you need to when your defensive line is getting pushed around like ragdolls.  One of the greatest attributes a defensive line has is sucking up blocks, freeing up your linebackers.  Our defensive line couldn't suck up a lollipop more or less blocks.  I think Evans, Sanders and Tremble are going to be a really nice TE group.  I can see all three getting time on the field.  If Sanders can improve as a blocker teams won't be so inclined to believe it is a pass play whenever Sanders is on the field.  Ryan Fitzgerald, I think was an awesome pick-up. Hopefully he can fill our kicker void. Luke Kandra many turn out to be our next Norwell.  Everything I have heard about him says he's a beast.  He needs some refinement, but the good news is he's got Hunt and Lewis (arguably the best guard tandem in the league) to learn from.
    • Great teams build through the draft and have several young players that start that are on rookie contracts. It's important to hit on players in rounds 4 thru 7.  These should be future starters and solid depth.  When you hit on most of your picks you free up a lot of cap space for those one- or two-year players to fill spots you are thin at. No GM is going to perfect on all their picks.  You're going to whiff every once in a while.  That was Hurney problem.  He'd nail the first pick but after that it was reach after reach and we couldn't get any depth on this team. I'm excited about Morgan as our GM and hopefully he'll be around a long time.  It will be even better if Canales can continue to grow as a head coach, both in the development of young players and play calling. I remember last season after Young came back in the lineup and started to perform well.  We saw different plays I had only seen other teams use.   If Canales's play design and play calling continue to grow. Morgan and Canales will be linked together for a long time.  It would be nice to see a Coach and GM together for a decade or two. Go Panthers
