All about the almighty dollar.

For those non-nerds who don't watch fake wrestling like I do, a kind-of but not-really thing happened there. The WWE informed all wrestlers that their own, personal Twitch/Cameo/other accounts now belong to the WWE. They can keep the account, if they stay "on brand" ... oh and give the WWE all of the money they are making .... to which they get a piece. In some cases, the talent was even using their own name, not their character name, but the WWE owns most of those too.

I prefer watching fake women's wrestling from Japan more than any of the American stuff, but I read about this. The slice of the pie from this counts against the wrestlers' contracts' guaranteed amount. So basically, they do twice the work for the same money. Andrew Yang is trying to bring attention to how the WWE mistreats their employ...independent contractors. Some of them are also starting to talk about unionizing.

The NFL doing this reeks of them wanting the same thing. They want to approve everything and get their slice of that pie too.

I don't see how this could hold up to legal challenge.

It must have REALLY pissed the WWE off when The Rock became a superstar outside of their confines.

It amazes me that grown ass adults watch that stuff. It's like a trailer park soap opera with some choreagraphed athletics mixed in.

ESPN has had this approach for decades. For those who are literate, read “Those Guys Have All the Fun.” ESPN’s execs said at one point “We don’t want another Berman (who became bigger than the shows he did/does).”

They did this for so long that, coupled with economic hardships — as much as a multinational network can have — drove their best/popular talent to other networks. That’s why they blow up SportsCenter with SVP. He’s all they have left.
