Andy Reid says he was dumb not to hire Matt Rhule as an assistant

For six seasons while Reid was coach of the Eagles, Rhule was an assistant at nearby Temple. Reid’s son spent time as a graduate assistant for the Temple football program, and told his dad what a great addition Rhule would be to the Eagles’ staff, but Reid didn’t hire him, and Rhule took a job on the division rival Giants’ staff.

Which was a dumb thing,” Reid said, via ESPN. “I should have found a spot. The next thing I know, he’s with the Giants. I was, ‘My god, that was not where I wanted him to go.'”

Reid’s son knew Rhule was going to do big things in coaching.

“My son just kept saying, ‘This guy is an unbelievable football coach,'” Reid said. “‘He’s just so smart. He knows both sides of the ball. He can coach anything. I’m just telling you, he’s a star down the road.’ At the time I had a good staff and I didn’t have room to bring somebody in. There was no space, period.”

Reid has an impressive coaching tree. Five current NFL head coaches (John Harbaugh, Doug Pederson, Ron Rivera, Sean McDermott and Matt Nagy) have been assistants under Reid, and several former head coaches were Reid assistants as well. But Rhule is the one who got away.

I really hope he has a long prosperous career with us.  He seems to have a good football mind and could be a Tomlin type of coach.  It think it all will be how he replaces coordinators as they move on.

We've been pretty fortunate to have had only 5 coach's in our 26 year history.  Siefert is the only coach who never got us to an NFCC or Super Bowl.  Whether you liked Capers, Fox or Rivera they at least gave us a season or two of hope.

Though things can change quickly, so far, I like what I have seen from Rhule.

    • That he gets worse while at the same time getting more exposure is just typical.
    • And, yes, I've been a slow boil, but watching continually watching shitty displays of football for weeks has me frustrated.
    • Bryce just didn't maximize Hunter Renfrow's skills. ***rant incoming*** But this isn't just about Bryce Young mistiming passes to Renfrow so bad that he's going to get Renfrow killed or hurt, this is also about incompetentence by Dave Canales. Renfrow can still play. He's putting DBs in a blender out there---making them play twister at the top of routes to keep up with him, and dumb Dave has the nerve to cut him. How about putting Hunter in the best position to help the damned offense by appreciating his skill set, DC? You're letting Bryce's apparent inability to make an accurate throw, or at least his timidity to push the ball down the damned field cloud your judgment and miscalculate talent---or maybe just miss on talent just as much as Bryce misses passes due to playing pussified football. It's fúcking unacceptable.  Speaking of misjudgment, I don't know if it's Dan Morgan or Canales, but Eijiro Evero is not the business at DC. I have said a few times that his scheme is not conducive to run-stopping efficiency. Hell, and after watching some clips of plays, now I absolutely know why. The gaps are at least half open before the play even fúcking starts. You are setting the opposition's RBs up for success with too much damned space at the line and in the second level. If our guys are taken out in these areas---at the line and in the second level---then the defense is screwed because it must rely on the safeties to cover too much ground to make the tackle. At least put Ransom in who is motivated to seek and destroy if you're going to effectively leave the safeties on an island.  And speaking of rookies, get our two new defensive ends more snaps to see if we can't generate more of a pass rush. For all the good the continued sorry display of defense that you're putting out for fan's to see (Ejiro, Dave and Dan), you may as well get the rookies generously involved. Fúck that money we gave second-rate (maybe second-rate) vets, we need a damned spark getting after the QB. Watch it, it's just another breakdown of the sh¡t we were subjected to last week. I say this with all respect: Fúck you, Dave! Fúck you, Dan! Learn how to run a fúcking franchise. Maximize the players, regardless of what you think you're supposed to do by the book. Cut the dead weight before another season is lost and fans lose interest in September. EE is "Ew!" Or for emphasis "EEw!" /end rant
