All Charges Dropped Against Former First-Round CB DeAndre Baker

He was pretty terrible when he did play and honestly he probably did actually do what was alleged. It’s just that they have no winnable case against him with witnesses being charged for extortion.

That said, yeah probably. He’s definitely got the potential to be very good.

Was this the one where people supposedly held up the alleged victims at gunpoint?

Speaking from not knowing much at all about the situation. What would two NFL players be robbing regular guys for? That never made sense to me. But again, this is about the first thing I’ve really read on it, so I probably missed something.

From the link:

According to the original arrest warrant, Baker and Seattle Seahawks cornerback Quinton Dunbar were accused of stealing money and watches while armed with semiautomatic firearms. The warrant stated that Baker intentionally threatened victims with a firearm. Prosecutors declined to file criminal charges against Dunbar because of insufficient evidence, but decided to proceed on Baker on Aug. 5.

The victims had already recanted their sworn statements last month in affidavits obtained by ESPN. Julius Lamar, Steven Compton and Tommy J. Hartshaw said during recent depositions that Baker "did not directly or indirectly participate in any robbery or assist in a robbery at the scene or elsewhere." The three men added that they didn't see Baker rob or assault anyone with or without a firearm.

The Broward State Attorney's Office dropped all charges after "the alleged victims and the known witnesses have become uncooperative and their credibility is inalterably tarnished," assistant state attorney Paul R. Valcore said in a statement.

The state had already moved to hold one witness in contempt of court for refusing to answer questions, and the defense moved to have one victim held in contempt for failing to appear for a deposition.

All four alleged victims had previously given sworn statements that they were paid to recant their initial sworn statements against Dunbar. Combined, the four men say they were paid a total of $55,000, according to a previous report by the New York Daily News.

Cohen had publicly expressed concerns about the credibility of the witnesses in the case from the start.

"Knowing that you have admitted liars -- admitted liars, there is no way to cut around it or change the story. They are, at best, admitted liars and convicted felons. You have four guys that are convicted felons and admitted liars. You filed based on their word against a guy that has no criminal history, always gives back to his community," Cohen told ESPN in August. "I wish I could think what they're thinking, but it's an impossibility. It's such bad judgment that you can't even put yourself into their shoes to imagine what he was thinking to file this case."

If convicted, Baker could have faced a mandatory minimum of 10 years and up to life in state prison.

With his legal problems in the past, he is hoping to return to the NFL, a source close to the former Giant told ESPN. Baker has been working out recently in South Florida.

It would behoove us to at least do our due diligence and find out about the guy.  It's possible he got the shaft.  I can't say anything about him as a player, but realistically, if he checks out "off the field", it would not hurt my feelings if we kicked the tires on him.

Yup. Baker and Dunbar were both charged. But Dunbar probably paid the victims to shut up so he had his charges dropped and is playing in Seattle.

That whole thing smelled fishy as fug from the get go. I say we give him a chance on a 2 year(Well the remaining this year and next potentially) and tell him to keep his nose clean outside of football for the duration.

Guys like this scare me.  You get to the NFL and you have to learn who to hang out with and who to not hang out with.  Right now it looks like Baker has not learned this yet.  It took Ray Lewis almost getting sent to prison to learn this.  If Baker continues to hang around guys like this it is just a matter of time before something else happens and it could be much worse.  If he has learned this lesson bring him in.  If not, stay as far away from him as you can.  That's why you talk to guys and check them out before you sign them.

The quest is did he learn his lesson from this? Is he still hanging around this type of person? Im assuming his lawyer said chill the fug out and go quiet for a while.

    • I would write “give remmers tight end help” on a yellow sticky note and stuck it in shulas playbook the night before superbowl 50.
    • And don’t worry about Bryce he will be great… Peyton Manning had a horrible rookie year too 😂
    • Nothing wrong with it at all until you start telling others they are bad fans or not fans. But you are the good fan because you never say negative stuff about the team.    I did many years of that type of uninformed fanning because there really was no info and coverage like there is with the internet.    I mean, I used to go to the store and get Street and Smith’s annual football issue. That was about the extent of what you could get if you didn’t live in a big city with sportswriters covering and reporting.  There was no video to look at or replay the games and if you didn’t live in the market you could only rarely see your football team play.    TI have fanned since being a kid in the early 1960s, and as late as 1995 - ‘97 I lived in Atlanta and good luck getting more than 3 or 4 games a year on TV. No radio either. No print coverage outside of an AP recap and box unless they played Atlanta.  People today that have always had the network connection don’t know.    I wasn’t very educated about the Panthers until I finally got internet.
