Partial explanation for the challenge loss

The Panthers had a game-management lapse near the end of the first half against Tampa Bay. After DJ Moore’s 42-yard completion and a Bucs’ penalty gave the Panthers a first down at the Tampa Bay 28 with eight seconds left, Bridgewater took his time at the line, rather than spike the ball before officials could review Moore’s catch.

The delay allowed Bucs coach Bruce Arians to call a timeout and the officials then reviewed the play, ruling that the ball hit the ground. In a similar situation the week before at Kansas City, the Panthers quickly ran a play before the officials could look at a Curtis Samuel reception.

But Rhule said part of the problem Sunday was the fact that no one in the coaches’ box could help him.

“It’s a little bit harder at home because the people upstairs can’t see the Jumbotrons. You go to some other stadiums, the people upstairs can see the Jumbotron,” he said. “So really in our place, I have to kind of count on me looking up at the Jumbotron.”

When the Panthers installed ribbon boards on the facing of the second deck at Bank of America Stadium a few years ago, it obstructed the view of the videoboards for people in the press box and coaches box, among other locations.

So Rhule has a point. But it’s also worth noting the coaches’ boxes are equipped with monitors showing the TV broadcast.

“Just from where I was on the field, it looked like it was clean,” Rhule said. “And no one that I can remember said, ‘Hey, he might have dropped that.’”

Owner David Tepper has said repeatedly he doesn’t want the Panthers at a competitive disadvantage. That’s why he spent $1 million on a practice bubble after buying the team from Jerry Richardson — so players wouldn’t have to keep practicing in a carpeted ballroom at the Charlotte convention center whenever it rained.

So expect Tepper to explore a possible fix with the coaches box sightlines, if it’s even structurally feasible. In the meantime, Rhule should dedicate a staff member to be in charge of replays and other game-management issues, as Ron Rivera did with Sam Mills III later in his tenure.

No matter what, in that situation there’s no reason to take your time getting the next play, JUUUUUST in case (like what actually happened). Unless he wanted to try a Teddy Bridgewater Hail Mary for a td, we were good for a FG. Didn’t need that extra down. Learning experience.

   On a side note....Why doesn’t TB throw like that more often? Take some arc off of the deep throws and the WRs won’t have to slow down all the time to catch them. He slung that ball.

Ya, even if you are positive it's a catch, get up there and run a play, any play. If the refs suspect anything they will stop the play but don't give the opponent time to manipulate it more. Hopefully Rhule learned his lesson.

I kind of feel this is the embodiment of the mentality of this team right now. Like they just expect to catch a break or someone else to fug up, but you got to take it in the NFL. We need to mentally "toughen up" and play like everyone is trying to take everything away from you starting from Rhule all the way down.

I will say too. Our hurry up offense was great the first few games and has gone to rivera age poo since then, I know they are trying to stretch the clock and not give the opponent the ball back but even with the game on the line its slowed way too much.

This strikes me as pretty dumb on the organization's part, honestly.

How do you not know that you want to keep from obscuring any part of the view from the coaches box?

Aside from being a pretty lame and embarrassing excuse, I really had no clue anyone responsible for looking at replays would actually rely on a jumbotron for their replay. I thought every team in the league had specific monitors just for this reason.
