Cleveland had Joe Thomas and Mitchell Schwartz, the best bookends in the game at the time. Also had Alex Mack for a while at C. Their OL is worse now but have a better QB and others and are much better as a team. Dallas had the best OL in the game for years and won 1 playoff game.

An OL is a piece of the puzzle as is a QB. The QB is the most important piece and even with the best LT, you can’t block the entire DL. Dallas used a ton of 1st round picks on OL and their D was meh. Have to get a QB and a little more drafting luck as well. Need to hit on day 2 picks and maybe a day 3 here and there.

Matt Kalil was a sure thing too. It’s still a risk (maybe less of a risk, but still a risk). If they like Lance or Wilson, no one will blame them for risking a high draft pick for the potential QB of your future. 
 

if we extend Moton and draft Sewell, we would just be a version of the Vikings when Teddy was there as our peak. Not terrible, at best we make the playoffs and maybe win a game. If we draft Lance or Wilson and they are the next great QB, our ceiling is the Super Bowl.

I understand that--but how many of the QBs taken early in round 1 over the last 10 years were decent?  Taking the 4th best QB with the sixth overall pick is hardly wise in the long run.   We need to make sure that our desperation for a QB does not cause us to pass on the best LT to come out in over a decade or more--all of the early first round bust QBs looked great in college....

How much of his evaluation was relying on him turning out to be great because of his brother?

Ryan had 3 Pro bowl selections and here comes his brother, the one with more talent coming into the league...
at a position of bigger value.
Also his team mate Tyron Smith came into the league the year before and did great at right tackle.

what i am after is, why did the evaluation go sooo wrong...  projection of things that might not have been there or something...

It is more likely (statistically) that Sewell is the next great LT and Lance or Wilson is the next Rosen or Manziel.  Not saying that I think that--but if Sewell is on the board and you take a flyer on either of these two QBs instead, you are likely making a long-term mistake.  Full Stop.

They would be foolish to pass on him---but they are the Bengals.   The only way I see it is if a team like New England gives Cincinnati a ton to move up for a QB---I think BB now realizes the source of his "Greatness" and it was not his reflection.  I could see the Pats doing something like that.

If you use the logic, "Well Matt Kalil was a LT..." Then you are selecting an isolated incident where it did not work out to make a statement about the whole.  It is a weak argument because for every Matt Kalil he can find, I can find 20 Jamarcus Russells.

      With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.

      Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.

      Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
