Does a game like tonight's change your opinion on trading up for Lawrence

Many moons ago people around here were this high up on Andrew Luck. Some folks around here were ready to anoint him Jesus.
It was a bit sickening actually, but whatever.

Even with a high pick, it is really a gamble. Some of the best QB's in the game were picked in later rounds. So many others picked 1-5 overall turned out to be average at best.

We don't trade ANYTHING to move up!

No.  No single player is worth that much capital.  Even a QB as good as he is right now.

Lawrence will be the king of New York soon so don't worry about him.  He will get laid more than Joe Nameth ever did in that town and probably will never live up to the hype.  Because as good as he is he won't fix the Jets.

If the Panthers have the 4th pick, I'm sure there will be a conversation, but I doubt it goes beyond that.

Consider this - the Panthers don't have to have Lawrence to be a better team for years to come - they simply need a QB that is more competent than Teddy. That's the question that needs to be asked, "Are we upgrading the QB position?" That answer is easy with Lawrence, but he's not an option. Ask that about Fields, Wilson, etc. I'd say it's likely that a couple of them are, by a long shot. That's what they should be focusing on.

If for some reason, Lawrence said he wouldn't play for the Jets, their demands for a trade would be extremely high and we would have to get in a bidding war.  Might end up having to give them 4-5 picks or more.

A more interesting and likely scenario is if we end up with picks 5-6 and Cincy has the third pick.  Cincy won't take a qb, so do we make a move to leapfrog whomever is in front of us?

No!   There is no other QB worth using picks to trade up for. Stay at your pick and take best available.

I agree that Lawrence is very unlikely, and the cost would seem to be crazy. However, if he approached it like Eli did in 2004, it drops the cost. Eli came out and said he didn't want to play for the Chargers, AND that he only wanted to go to NY.  Here was the trade....

Giants got 2004 #1 overall

Chargers got 2004 #4 overall, 2004 3rd, 2005 1st, and 2005 5th

Somebody needs to convince Dabo to talk to Trevor about Charlotte. You know 2 hours from Trevor's beloved Clemson. When both teams are playing at home, Trevor could watch his Tigers on a few Saturdays, and Dabo could watch Trevor a few Sundays. Have Trevor tell the Jets he only wants to play for the Panthers, just like Eli told the Chargers about the Giants. Trevor has leverage of a potential return to Clemson leaving the Jets without him or draft compensation.

Why? If Lawrence snubbed the Jets they would have no choice at all. If we get to pick 4 (very possible), that's not that far of a drop for them and they would be sending him to the NFC instead of AFC. It would take a fair amount (something like 1st and 2nd this year, 1st next year), but not something crazy that would cripple us in the future...

I would do 1st and 2nd this year, plus 1st next year in heartbeat, but that is nowhere close to what it would take.

You have to remember it wouldn't only be us trying to trade up, there are probably 10 teams who would give up alot for him.

The Jags would probably give a better deal than that and the Jets would only have to go back one spot.

3 1st and 3 2nds is probably a good starting point, and I doubt that would even get it done.

Pick three equals Penei Sewell.

I'm no more sure you could talk the Bengals out of that pic that I am that you could talk the Jets out of Lawrence.

If we trade with them, they would know we were going to pick a qb.  If they feel that the team at 4 would also pick a qb, then they might be willing to trade.  They would still have a good shot at Sewell, and pick up a couple of additional picks or players at the same time.  I would think it would be worth the risk, they might as well.

Maybe. That might also be a risk they're not willing to take.

It's also worth pointing out that their draft position is a lot more locked in right now than ours is.

    • Everyone knew the catch was secured and didn't move. That was clear to the entire audience. The only ones who thought it wasn't a catch were in the NYC home office. They knew they'd just offer an apology the next day.
    • NEVER FORGET!!!!   Canales was on no one's radar. Tepper couldn't get anyone to come here. He was all in on Ben Johnson. Nobody wants to work with Tepper, however Canales tenure may prove important for the next guy. This guy still has no idea what he's doing.
    • The 4th down play was poor execution by Chuba. He didn't want to get physical like Rico and cut North South to lean on his blocks from Tremble and Ekwonu for half a yard. Also, the 3rd down play before that Bryce audibled out to a QB run and almost got the 1st down was on Chuba for not knowing the play call leading to poor execution. You can see Chuba's confusion when Bryce had to realign him. Then Chuba thought he was getting the handoff and was slow to develop his double team on the DE with Tremble. Then Chuba hesitated on pushing the block and just ran to the sideline making Bryce have to loop around him. This pulled the DE away from Tremble forcing Chuba to chip on the DE late and leaving the safety as a free defender. Chuba was suppose to double down on the DE to let Tremble peel off to the safety. This allows Bryce to set up his run to the inside or outside after the safety commits. You can also see Tremble walk over to talk to Chuba after the play and Chuba shrugs which tells me he didn't know what to do. The audible would have worked on 3rd and the dive would have worked on 4th. The plays were good calls and drawn up well. The question is why was Chuba unprepared for those plays in two critical back to back plays? I like Chuba as a 1st down RB and passing downs, but I have always seen him lacking the power and vision to be a short yardage power back. Chuba didn't come prepared for the Saints game or he was thrown into a position at the 3 spot that he was never prepared for.
