So was Hurney the one that decided to cut Cam?

Premise: Marty Hurney insisted on cutting Cam.

Supporting lines of reasoning:

(1) Hurney was fired for making poor, gutty decisions instead of being will to integrate data analytics into his decision-making process;

(2) @RoaringRiot has confirmed Hurney is the one that insisted on Bridgewater, a hill he was willing to die on;

(3) Tepper, Rhule, and Brady seemed very high on Cam leading up to his release;

(4) Hurney seems to have had more shot-calling power than any of us originally suspected.

None of these lines of reasoning are anywhere close to what's needed to form a solid conclusion - e.g. that Marty Hurney insisted on jettisoning Cam in favor of Bridgewater, a move that ultimately got him fired - but it's an interesting thought and as a narrative would explain some things we don't currently have explanations for. What say you?

I hope not because if Tepper, Rhule and Brady were high on Cam with the giant turd he is taking in NE, that’s worse judgment than TB

Now if what you mean by high on him as in sending him out on his last year as a lame duck to save cap space and dump him after the year to draft the franchise QB with an extra 40m they gave TB, that would have been nice

I never thought I’d say this but Cam would’ve faired better here than NE. The talent on offense there is terrible. Plus we would’ve saved money to see how it played out.

you can’t just look at the offense in New England and say cam would’ve been the same here. There are ten other guys on the field. That matters.

in spite of his occasional stinkers i'd say cam had a better year than teddy on a MUCH worse team. if the patriots had our wide receiver corps they'd be in the playoffs.

I know people have said Brady insisted on Bridgewater and wouldn’t join the Panthers if we didn’t get him. I always found that bull.
Before the season Hurney seemed very confident we could make the playoffs with this team.
As much as people think Rhule had a ton of control I think he didn’t have as much as people thought.
Brown was a Hurney pick. Bridgewater felt like a Hurney signing, the bloated contract definitely was vintage Hurney. CMC mega contract was a mistake, Shaqs contract as well.
Hurney is old fashioned. Which I always interpreted as: Hurney builds the team with some input from he coach but Hurney has the final say and the coach tries to work with what Hurney gives him. Which for 3 years hasn’t worked at all and resulted in worsening records.

Always felt like Hurney was in a weird position. Like he had way too much power but also here’s an unbreakable 7 year contract with an unknown college coach that may go down as a glorious dumpster fire.

Used to be the GM had a big say in picking the coach but increasingly around the league there is no rhyme or reason to the organizational hierarchy.

Either way at least Hurney is gone. He is awful at his job and has been since his first stint and there was zero, O, zero zero zero reason to bring him back in the first place.

if by team you mean wide receivers and HB, you are correct

the rest of the team though...it’s statistically just isn’t true

but whether he played better here or not isn’t the main point - it’s neither here nor there because they way Cam is playing overall is not worth an extension and having cap tied up in him at his age and injury history, he isn’t the same, and especially with a new coach, GM, and system in place.

an extension would have been a horrible move for this franchise, drafting our new, next franchise QB was always meant to be so we can compete for years to come on a rookie deal...time to let go and embrace that.

Cam with Moore/Anderson/CMC/David/Samuel would have been nice to see.

Funny that we cut Cam in the same offseason when we finally fill the holes he needed help with for years.

If TB is 0/7 on game winning drives I believe Cam would probably win at least 3-4 of those just on big balls swag alone.

Not enough credence given to either of these very real statements.

Now that Hurney is gone, how much longer does the Rhule honeymoon last?

I am a huge Mahomes fan. I love watching him play and I think he’s gonna go down as one of the greatest. He’s like the MJ of football to me. But I’m not naive to think that he did not land in the absolute perfect situation to maximize his talent and coaching with Andy Reid. That team was stacked offensively before he was drafted, he was just the missing piece to take them over the hill. Do I think Mahomes would still be great if he went to the worst team in the league? Yes but I don’t think we’d see him in the same light because team play matters, even with the greats. Montana had monster talents, young had monster talents, Brady had monster talents. The greats had talent around them and were put in great situations.

    • For me to judge I look at it by group: QB - Improved most likely RB - Improved most likely (rookie upside) WR - Greatly improved (rookie upside) TE - Improved most likely (rookie upside) OL - Greatly improved DL - Slight downgrade (maybe?  Robinson + Wonnum + Clowney < Burns???  Could be equal or better) LB - Slight downgrade (different players - rookie upside) CB - Slight downgrade (rookie upside) S - Push Coaching - Greatly improved To me I expect us to be significantly better overall - but significant over last year means 5-6 wins.
