Gantt weighs in on Deshaun Watson and Matt Stafford

The only stat you could really point at to argue that Deshaun Watson’s a vastly better quarterback option than Matthew Stafford is date of birth. He’s still very good, and has a great contract. The Lions wasted Stafford by being awful, as with Calvin Johnson and Barry Sanders.

Although Darin does write in a official capacity for the Panthers now, one should not assume his opinions are that of the franchise.

I think Stafford would give us a better chance to compete quickly. Watsons contract and trade requirements would set us back 4-5 years. We could compete with Stafford in 1-2 years. Longevity is the big problem, Stafford has 5 years left tops, Watson has 10-12 years left. Question is do we want to win now and need to retool faster, or take the 5 year plan?

Gantt is still stuck in this fox era view of panthers football where the ultimate goal is for the panthers to stay in their lane, make the sensible, safe, economical move and build a really scrappy roster that contends for a wild card spot

I’m not gonna be mad at either one, but age is an asset, especially since we’re at the start of something. I love Watson.

But, if we have 5 playoff seasons with Stafford while we draft young QBs until we hit on one, then it might be a great ramp-up process for us.

Stafford is 32. We're still several seasons away from completing our rebuilding process. We need a younger QB imo. Stafford will go to the 49ers who are in a "win now" kind of position imo. If not the 49ers, then you plug Stafford into the Colts and they're back in the playoffs imo. He's not coming here.

Or he could possibly be putting out misinformation.  He does work for the team after all.  You guys are terrible poker players.

I've found Gantt's opinions to be gratuitously snarky, especially as it pertains to the Panthers, but his info isn't necessarily incorrect. He's always had some access--even more now, but this statement is not necessarily an endorsement or indicator; It's food for thought!

Or just has the common sense to realize we aren't trading for Watson.
