Its dumb if they pass on some top defensive help (which they desperately need) to get a guy that has to sit for 2 years.  It doesnt make sense.  ATL is not that far off talent wise and they sure as hell dont need a qb.

And his cap hit is pretty substantial for the next 2 seasons.  Much like the Packers drafting love, this would make zero sense

https://overthecap.com/player/matt-ryan/823/

We invested our entire draft on defense last year, and got some real gems it seems.  At some point we're going to have to invest draft capital into the offense.

It's actually a REALLY smart pick.

Matt Ryan will be 36 when the next season starts.  The contract has an out after 2021.  It doesn't get any clearer.  Take a rookie, let him learn behind Ryan.  If Ryan continues to play at a high level and it looks like a quick turnaround for them, they stick with him until 2023.  If not, they have their heir apparent from a great QB class sitting there.

Too many fans (and people in general for that matter) get confused between what they want to happen and what is actually realistic to expect.  For obvious reasons, all Panthers fans would like the Falcons and Lions to hold on to their picks and choose any player who is not a QB.  That's what we want.

The reality of the situation is that both of those teams need to replace an aging franchise QB.  The QB class this year is considered incredibly strong.  These teams have very high draft picks.  There will be a good prospect available.

The only way either team passes is if they dig up something on the players they have available when they are on the clock.  I would be VERY wary at pick eight if any of the top QB's are still on the board.  It could easily mean that someone found something that spooked them.

It depends on the strategy involved. If you are trying to make a SB run in the next 2 years, then you go defense. If you recognize that 2 drafts isnt enough to turn this team around before Ryan is done, then looking at a QB makes sense.

Atlanta is not 1 key defensive piece away from fielding a championship caliber team. They need pieces all over so they would need to absolutely nail the next 2 drafts, which is statistically unlikely, to get there. All the while, Ryan is aging. His milage is limited.

Go for it all now and hope that a new coach, relying on key rookie pieces, can get you there in the next 2 years and you swing for the fences, or take your future QB now, set yourself up for the next 10-15 years if he's "the guy" and use all your remaining picks to go for the championship.

Its 50/50 which way they go but to consider the future of your franchise is never dumb. It's the one thing Hurney could never do and look at how many winning seasons that got him .

Their offense is fine but they need a qb and a pass rusher or 2.  Picking the 3rd best qb over the top corner would be crazy IMO when Ryan is still playing at a high level

They always do a good job evaluating the top prospects.  Their mock draft is worst case scenario for us however.

First off, I really like that sight, I hadn't seen it before. Thanks. Second, if it does play out like this with all 4 QB's being gone, LT is the next most important position IMO, so I'm stoked. that being said, I don't know much about the LT prospects outside of Sewell being the lead dog.

Also, this mock still had several day 2 QB's left on the board with starting potential; Trask, Newman, and Ridder specifically. Those aren't the worst conciliation prizes considering we would have LT locked down for 5 years AND TB to start out the season if needed.

Very few teams actually employ this strategy though.  Most go with filling the immediate, glaring holes they have versus drafting a guy who they know will not play at all, especially with a super valuable first round pick.

They do, except QB is the most hard to fill position on the field. If you think that the future of your franchise is there at 4, whether or not he sits 2 years, you take him because you dont know when you will have another opportunity. QB is the only position I do that for.

Again all of this based off whether or not they think one of those QBs is the guy. Most recent to do it was KC. They moved up and took their guy, sat him a year, and he's the face of the franchise.

Packers did it a year ago...

Anything can happen, I think we will have to jump to at least 5 to secure one of the ''considered elite'' QB talents.

I can see it happening, but I'm not sold on NYJ taking a QB considering Darnold is three years removed from a top selection on what has been a dumpster fire of a team. I'd say they could trade back, and look to continue to bolster that roster.

However, the cost for #2 is high finding a trade partner might be difficult, OL / WR IMO are biggest items to address in NYJ vs securing another young signal caller to bring into a depleted roster.

Off the top of my head, the Packers and Chiefs are the only teams to do this recently, no?

Just like everyone should have been wary of Aaron Rodgers falling...

I disagree, Ryan is going to be 37 next year, and there window is closed until he's probably 40 or 41. 37 is around the age QBs retire that aren't named Drew Brees and Tom Brady.

The Falcons are in perfect position to get their next QB without having to move at all in the draft.

As far as ATL is concerned, it's ''smart'' BOTH ways:

1) Have your QB of the future in waiting

2) Considering the investment in Ryan, Julio, and that fact that they're a solid defense away from being a playoff contender, I can see them also drafting to win

I don't really think there is a wrong answer here for them, they could even trade back, barring injury they likely have 2-3 premium years left in Ryan and Jones, with guys like Ridley, and Hooper at TE, they're in relatively good shape no matter who the QB is from a weapons stand point over that small window.

Guys have to realize that moral victory will have either cost us the QB, or additional draft capitol. It's going to be a crazy off-season, you'd have to think Stafford is traded before his 10M roster bonus in March so we will start to see things take shape. DET is in a good spot if things play out their way, picking at #7, with the potential to land a 1st + additional comp for Stafford to begin a rebuild.

Slater would be a great pick. I would be very happy with this. Literally the only non QB position I would want at 8

Totally agree on this one. Would love a QB, but a long term starter at LT would be great if the right QB is not there.
