Brett Kollman did a video on Jaycee Horn back in mid-April before the draft and listed him as his bonafide #1 CB. We've still got a couple of weeks until preseason action, so why not continue to hype up our 1st round pick? 😄

Synopsis

  • Jaycee Horn covered the following players during his college career: AJ Brown, Kyle Pitts, Devonte Smith, Jaylen Waddle, Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs, Elijah Moore, Dyami Brown, Justyn Ross, Cordell Powell, Josh Palmer, Trevon Grimes, Van Jefferson, Tyree Cleveland, Seth Williams, and Terrace Marshall Jr
  • Believes xp taking on those challenges will be one of his biggest reasons for success in the NFL as all of them took a pound of flesh from him (esp Devonte Smith in 2019)
  • Hardest assignment was 2019 Bama vs. x4 1st rd WRs as a sophomore where he had 2 PBU on 8 targets though he gave up 5 catches for 113yds and a long TD to D. Smith
  • Bama WRs took adv of his lack of hand usage and tendency to play on low shoulder position a lot in man that left him to a few specific routes that Bama took adv of
  • Slippery WRs like D. Smith make it hard to maintain the low shoulder position
  • Had a tough game vs. D. Smith due to not having proper hand placement from lack of exp against players that he needed to.
  • Significantly changed his playstyle after the game where D. Smith torched him as a sophomore
  • Had issues with trying to secure the ball before securing the route by peeking back at the QB without a hand on the WR, which is what caused the 40yd TD to D. Smith. Even did it against Jeudy.
  • Eye discipline issue was part of his over aggression as a CB
  • Put a premium on securing routes first and not turning his head until he was sure he was in phase was prevalent in 2020
  • Gave up a catch 1 out of 17 coverage snaps as a sophomore, as a junior it was 1 out of 30
  • Was a much more physical corner in 2020, started playing man coverage primarily from a high shoulder position instead of the low shoulder while also soft-shoeing releases instead of pressing at the line. This allowed him to keep a hand on the WRs chest and back and better feel the routes.
  • His play in 2020 reminded Kollman of Richard Sherman, Jalen Ramsey, and Stephon Gilmore.
  • His new physical, more technical style allowed him to stack over WRs and still be able to peek into the backfield while preventing the WR from comfortably running their route
  • Work ethic to learn from mistakes and develop, inching from his already high floor closer and closer to his potentially astronomically, historically high ceiling
  • Unique advantage over other college corners is his resume showing his experience vs. NFL-level talent

I like Horn and this guy does good videos and I’m definitely hyped but just so I don’t get overly excited and potentially let down I just feel the need to say that I bought into the Isaiah Oliver hype from him a few years back and that guy was a massive bust...

He needs to be considering we passed on a top rookie QB prospect. We seem to be taking the SF approach of build the BEST possible team, and insert QBs as needed if one doesn't work out.

With the notion that IF we have a complete team we can mortgage picks to move up if needed, but if Darnold aka our Garoppollo works out then ok to that as well.

I really, really like the idea of building a complete team that allows a young QB to be brought in and helped out so that they're not brutalized into a shortened career.

Imagine if Cam came in to the NFL and the team had a legitimate defense those first two seasons.

Well we passed on the potential 4th best remaining rookie QB. Consider that a TE even got drafted before him. A TE...

Patrick Mahomes had three receivers and two running backs taken before him. Drafts can be weird who knows how the kid will be 5 years from now.

now that I've watched the video, I feel even better about my suspicions that we've drafted our best corner ever, and a chance to be the best player we've ever drafted.  Kollman, who I've never heard of, obviously knows what he's talking about, and for him to say Jaycee is the best he's seen since Ramsey is pretty impressive.  I'm not sure I've ever been more excited about a draft pick.

Also, I hope to see more posts from Kollman.

It seems pretty obvious that you rate Fields way more than our coaching staff did. I was pretty excited at the prospect of getting Lawrence or Fields heading into last season myself. But many teams clearly cooled down on Fields. Two relatively small school QBs went ahead of him.

My point is you can lose sleep at night comparing Fields to Horn for the next three seasons but it doesn’t appear our staff was all that interested in him. Whether it was Horn or someone else, it’s likely we were taking someone other than Fields regardless. So comparing them all season is pointless. We clearly didn’t want him. Whether that is was the right or wrong opinion remains to be seen. But he wasn’t ever coming to Carolina.

I'll never forget chilling with Joe Charlton in my apartment here in South End, 2 months before the draft and before Horn really got everyones attention.... He told my friends and I that Horn was "BY FAR the best corner in the draft." At the time I was thinking it was Surtain, but he told me Horn was 10xs better and the best athlete he had ever seen...

I know fans can get upset at the draft. I mean, I can get a bit upset myself. But after a while, you just gotta let it go man. I mean, after so long who cares. I just don't get it. For us fans harping on the past has no bearing on the future.  

 

I guess it's all part of being a fan. It takes all kinds. I tell ya what.

      As much as I despise Billy B, his philosophy on QBs is how I would approach things if I were a GM. You always keep looking for your next starter.  He has Bledsoe, who got injured and his backup ended up being the GOAT. Even while he had that going, he kept getting his next guy and developing them. When Brady got hurt, Cassel stepped in and went 11-5 and they missed the wild card by dumb luck. Who knows how far they would have gone if they had gotten in. Jimmy Gs career started in NE. There were others, but he always kept looking.  You can't be afraid to keep looking for your next starter, but it looks like we're afraid to look for more than a marginal one. If you're going to offer a $25m contract with incentives, that screams marginal QB. It also screams you're just a transition until we find our guy. After a 10 or 11 win season, he's not accepting that offer. And then you're in a Daniel Jones situation. Do you pay for a year of success and pray it wasn't a one year wonder?  To this point, Bryce has really produced nothing, yet for whatever reason, our FO has not even sniffed at the idea that we need a real QB room with real QBs. Dalton was never starter potential, Plummer was a joke. KP certainly isn't, neither is Grier.  Our approach to the QB room needs to be one of strength not fear. Bring in guys who can compete or who you think can compete. This is THE elite position, in an elite sport, paid premium salary, where production matters. Either you produce or you can lose your job. It's not mean, it's just the reality of the position.  And I'm really just tired of our candy ass approach to it.

      If you plug Bryce onto the Pro Bowl roster you might have a chance to compete for a SB. If he's surrounded by top tier talent with a top tier defense on the other side, a field flipping punter, and a kicker good from 60+ you might have a chance. But that means you basically have to recreate Saban's Bama in the NFL and that's impossible... and Bryce couldn't win a championship in that environment either. What the Panthers didn't realize when they got so obsessed with his "PG mentality" was that what they were looking st was a "barely checks the box PG". The basketball equivalent of Bryce would be an undersized PG with marginal athleticism who can make the basic plays but adds nothing to the team in terms of elevating the overall team. Not a great shooter, not a great defender, not a great driver. Just a guy who can basically get you into the offense and be a matador on defense. Basically a placeholder while you look to upgrade the PG position.
