Plenty of old school coaches had full control. Hell, some didn't even have a GM to work with. Jimmy Johnson with the Cowboys is arguably the most successful example, but you also had guys like Bill Parcells, Mike Shanahan and even Butch Davis (granted, that was probably a mistake). If you go back further to the days of guys like Vince Lombardi, Don Shula and Paul Brown, it was even more common.

But did any of them old guys ride an Appaloosa? Inquiring minds want to know.

It isn't new, special, unique or revolutionary at all.

The most notable recent example is probably Pete Carroll who's had full control since she took the Seahawks job, but before him Mike Holmgren had the same thing. And there are others as well, like that guy up in Massachusetts whose name escapes me at the moment 🤔

So yeah, we're not doing anything "non-traditional" whatsoever. This model is as old as the league itself.

Hey who does Fitterer report to?

😂

What a tradition huh?

What does the organizational chart look like? Is it David Tepper > Matt Rhule = Scott Fitterer, or Tepper > Rhule > Fitterer? Are the coach and GM considered equals, or does one report to the other? Based on what I know about how Tepper ran his other businesses, my guess is the latter. — Jay, Hermosa Beach, Calif.

These questions always feel like traps, because it almost suggests a level of conflict or wielding superiority that doesn't appear evident.

To make a long story short, Rhule runs football here. Tepper paid him a lot of money to come here and build something according to his design. He and Fitterer both report to Tepper, but Rhule's in charge. Rhule and Fitterer have a good and complementary relationship, and the chemistry and respect they have shown as they get to know each other seems genuine. But yeah, if you want to make a chart, Rhule is the top non-Tepper name on it.

So, there you have it. One of life's mysteries pertaining to the Panthers' hierarchy of power, has been answered by Darin Gantt.

And before someone says Hurney had more power, the hiring of Matt Rhule effectively cut Hurney's power off at the knees. But, even if you just stubbornly refuse to accept that "truth", you know who to "blame" from this point forward. Until Tepper says otherwise, the buck stops with Rhule!

And this is why, after 21 years of season tickets, I’m telling the Panthers to kiss my ass

David Tepper in 3 seasons has ruined this team   Anyone who believes otherwise is drinking homer kool aid

more power to them. You too can cough up $7k for this loser

    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
    • Ok LT and Petersen are a cut above everyone else to me cmc and Faulk are interchangeable on this list.  though Faulk was better career wise
