He’s a rookie…fitt took him round 3 this year

I don't think anyone has unseated Burris yet. Franklin is most likely to.

Not that I have seen. Honestly it's Burns, Brown, Horn, and Chinn show. Those guys are exciting on every damn play it seems. 

 

Then again, ygm lined up against Moton the most. May have something to do with it.

Today was an almost perfect day to attend Carolina Panthers training camp. Perfect weather, players were in pads, and practice took place on the near field. Really it was a trifecta of good fortune I am very much appreciative of.  On with the thoughts and musings. 

 

- The starting offensive line was most commonly:  Erving - Eiflen - Paradis - Miller - Moton . I would be shocked if this was not our week one offensive line. The right side of the line played superior to the left, as you can imagine. 

- Moton took all of his reps at RT for the entire day. 

- Brady Christensen also took all his reps at RT on the second string. Christensen still looked very raw to me. He isn't close to being starting material on the right side and won't be playing on the left anytime soon. 

- Robby Anderson is playing with a big chip on his shoulder. Perhaps he is responding to the added competition in the form of Terrace Marshall Jr. After a nice one on one drill, Robby let some emotion out by punting the ball straight up in the air. 

- Derrick Brown is an absolute beast. In one on one drills he basically just bull dozes anyone in front of him and there isn't much they can do about it. This guy is going to have a monster year. 

- The Darnold to Arnold connection is developing quickly. With each passing day the chemistry between them can literally be seen growing. I am having to now temper my expectations. 

- Speaking of Sam Darnold, today was his best day yet. He looked poised, in control, and threw some of the best passes I have seen in camp in many seasons. Still, there were also plenty of sacks from him holding on to the ball too long. I am hoping this will work itself out as he gets more comfortable with the play book. 

- Brian Burns was a force all day today. He lined up on both the left and right side where he got multiple sacks on the day. Mostly against Erving but one also against Moton. 

 

How does DB compare to Kris Jenkins?? Raw power, 2nd year, vs OL, etc.

      I look at it like get on top of the situation. Stay ahead of it. If it costs you a year of not drafting a starter at number three WR in the first so be it. We need new blood there in 2027 if not 2026, and need to get some OL on rookie deals.   At the same time the big picture is considered, we have a QB that has yet to earn an extension and you can go glass half full if you want but he had about half the good games that he needed to have. Fewer, IMO, but the point is he is not a lock to earn an extension.    Which would really put next year’s number one in play for QB and take OT off the table. So I think it needs to be on the table this year.

Here are the biggest takeaways:   The best offensive lines in football (PHI, DET, TB) were built through the draft in the early rounds Other teams (most notably LAC) are following the same approach in team building Offensive line is something a team should target in the early rounds (1-3), as the success rate significantly declines in the later rounds both in the short and long-term Offensive tackles have a higher success rate through the draft than interior offensive linemen, regardless of round Acquiring free agent offensive line does have its benefits, particularly for elite units filling one hole. Interior offensive is typically the way to go Top-end offensive line talent is far less likely to be available via trade or free agency compared to other positions year to year, only emphasizing the importance of the draft   My words: we were forced to make some big signings on interior after years of poor OL drafting and neglect. It worked but isnt sustainable. We need to get right. Drafting tackles high is a successful formula. We need to start now to have any hope going forward.
