It is now time for me, your ruler, to weigh in on the Carolina Panthers 2021 season. I have taken into account all variables, known and unknown, and developed what I think is the most accurate season prediction possible. 

 

Let us begin. 

 

Fast Start

Out of the gate the Carolina Panthers appear to be a team on the rise. starting 3-0 with talks of playoffs starting once again. While the team does look much improved, their early success is also due to the weak front end of their schedule. 

The Wall

By game 4 the Panthers will hit a wall, mainly due to the weakness of their offensive line. By then, teams will be working around Matt Rhule and his system of hiding awful players via scheme. At this point, Elfein will be benched permanently and replaced by Dennis Daley with Deonte Brown becoming the new starting right guard. The line does not improve immediately , but instead sees incremental growth with each passing game. By November they will resemble a professional football offensive line. 

The QB 

Sam Darnold will flash moments of brilliance but also inconsistency. However, his play will be strong enough for the Carolina Panthers to compete in every game. Darnold will also do what Teddy never could, win multiple games in the 4th quarter. 

The Emergence of the Dominating D

This season will mark the return of a punishing, dominating defense in Carolina. Derek Brown will come into his own as Brian Burns gets All Pro numbers. Jeremy Chinn becomes the field general we all want him to be as Jaycee Horn improves as the season transpires and develops into our first shut down corner since Bradberry. 

Conclusion

The Carolina Panthers finish their 2017 season with a 9-8 record, narrowly missing a wild card birth due to a tiebreaker loss. While disappointing, this sets up an excited fan base for the 2022 season with the playoffs a real possibility.

This would fit with the general Rhule college track. If we are in the 7-9 win range, next year we could see our big jump.

Unlike college though, you have to recruit and that takes some time.  Taking over a horrible college program and making 4 and 5 star recruits commit to a doormat program rebuild is a task.  Also, in the NFL you typically don't have those monster swings in records either.  Teams with 1-2 wins aren't double digit clubs by the next season. Sure, it's happened, but SUPER rare.

That said, last years club won five games despite a new staff, dealing with Covid, a super green defense, Joey Slye and Teddy Bridgewater; where all but a couple losses were within a score.

We lost what 8 games last year by 7 or less?…without CMC

that’s tells us we were not clutch…margin of error in games is not that much

i am in the minority in that I think our QB is going to be good

if our kicker doesn’t turn out to be a choker, and our defense can stop the run (which just killed us last year), I think we can win 10 games, maybe 11

Anything under 7-8 wins this season will be considered a failure of a season IMO.

And that failure will probably rest on one player - Sam Darnold.

If he even plays at an average level, this team will compete for a playoff spot. If Darnold fails…and we all know the team didn’t bring in another starting option, it’s going to be an awful, terrible, miserable season.

So many of us focus on the offense which may be hindered by the offensive line. Our weapons are elite if you ask me so if Darnold can hang in there with our Oline we'll score some points.

Our defense is what I think will make or break us.  We'll be in every game if this defense is as exciting on the field as it is on paper. 

I believe the defense carries us to an extra win or two and we'll be between 10-7 and 12-5.

I just don't see Sam "failing" this year.  He had one objectively bad season in NY - last year, where the deck was stacked against him from jump.  poo weapons, poo coach, poo scheme, poo team overall, and the team was 100% in tank mode.  Other than last year, Sam looked like a young, talented, developing QB.  Hopefully last season didnt give Sam the "David Carr" treatment where hes just  damaged beyond repair.  Personally I don't see it, and I think this new life is going to give him juice.  Plus, I think Joe Brady is going to scheme is ass off all year and put Sam in the best possible position to succeed.

I like the optimism but I’m a realist I think we win 6 maybe 7. I think if they could have worked on offensive line a little more I would have said maybe 9 games. Darnold will struggle, I know he has weapons but I could see how he reacted to that pressure in the preseason game and I just seen same Darnold as in NY.

Rhule never recruited particularly well in college. He is more of a "winning culture" guy, so I expect that might translate a little better to the NFL. 

We have some big challenges with the unprecedented dearth of talent during the rebuild but we looked ahead of schedule last season. If we nailed another draft class, it could accelerate our process even more. While we lack some key depth, we do have the talent to contend in the next few years. We just have to keep adding to the talent pool at a greater rate than it is being subtracted. On the surface, they seem to be doing that.

I think that will be the clear storyline of the season, Darnold and that OL. We may have struggles elsewhere but that dynamic has the biggest potential to take or add W's.

I would be shocked if our failures or successes elsewhere have a bigger impact than that.

LOL dude he completed like 75% of his passes for 160 yards and 2 TDs / no turnovers in 1 half of football.  I will take that every single game and so will the team.

      You have just been hired to be the GM.  You have a new owner and have been given full control of the roster. What is your plan, who do you keep, who to you trade?   For me. (Disclaimer I am not the expert some of you think that you are, and this is my opinion)  Coaches Dave Canales has a plan, and I will give him the time to implement it.  it's going to take a couple of years to see it through.  Defensive Coordinator Evero is in a tough spot.  He doesn't have the talent to run a competitive defense.  The focus will be getting him players so he can run his defense.  The O-line is our strength, which is very laughable since last year it was our weakness.  I'd try to keep all 5 together, You have some decent back-ups in Zavala and Christensen and a future center in Rahm. QB I would try to keep Dalton for another season and look for one in the draft.  Maybe look for a QB that needs a fresh start somewhere else as a backup and let Canales work his magic with him. Tight End Sanders is a rookie and playing like one but should develop into a good TE.  Tremble is adequate for now.  The remaining TEs I would clear out especially Thomas WR I would try to sign Jonnson to an extension by the trade deadline. If I cannot get a deal done than I look for a trade for him. I wouldn't take anything lower than a 2nd.  He's shown he can be a very valuable WR.  It would put stress on the WR room but I would learn quickly who is going to fight to be the next top target for our QB.    We have Theilen for one more season, XL has shown flashes and Coker when given the chance seems to be keeper.   MIngo and the other WRs are going to have to prove they are NFL WRs if we trade Johnson away.  RB.  I would release Sanders before the ink was dry on my contract.  He's a waste of a roster spot.  Hubbard would be my #1 back, Brooks would replace Sanders in the backup role for the remainder of 2024.  Get him a couple of carries per game so 2025 he has some experience.  Even fully healed I would not put him as the lead back.  Defensively we are a mess.   We signed players that may never see the field this season and so many of our good players are on IR.   Brown and Horn are about the only two veterans that are elite.  Defensive Line   I would keep all current players under contract.  This should be our No. 1 target if we aren't going to go for a QB in 2025.  In fact, I would take a DE only if he is a Hutchinson/Watt type DE LB I would let Shaq finish the year out and move on. Jewell is under contract for a couple of seasons and is serviceable.  Wallace is raw and IMO needs playing time to get better.  I think he was a good pick and will pay dividends as he matures. CB Horn is playing well and as of this writing he isn't injured.  He would be another player I would consider for a trade if we get GREAT compensation for, otherwise I would extend him.  Jackson IMO will be better if we can get some sort of a pass rush. Safety  Woods and Franklin are our best players but Franklin is on IR.   2024 Trade Deadline.  There are two players IMO that could give us draft capital to rebuild the Panthers.   Johnson and Horn.  Johnson will only net us a 2nd or a 3rd because most teams know he probably isn't going to stay and can just wait to sign him in 2025. Our only hope is that Johnson is the final piece for a playoff push for another team.   As GM I would make a trade if we get a 2nd or 3rd for him. Horn on the other hand would give a team this year and next to work out a deal and we could get some nice draft capital for him.   Minimum one 1st and one 2nd.   2025 offseason This really depends on what you plan to do with Young. I would start him the final 6 games and see if he has learned anything from being behind Dalton.  If he flounders in the final 6 games than I would trade him for whatever I could get.  I would try not to create anymore dead cap space for this team.  Those that are on the team and have one year left they would be Panthers in 2025. 2025 we might be more competitive but most likely not a playoff team.  Creating more dead cap space doesn't help.  My focus would be QB and DE as my top two priorities going into the draft.  My free agents would be limited fill only holes that require a glaring need of depth or a starter.  I would try to have as much cap space as I could for 2026.  2025 Draft  My draft is based on we were successful in trading Horn for a 1st and a 2nd and Johnson for a 2nd.   In round one I would take DE and QB.  Round 2 thru 4 would be defensive players unless someone on offense we rated high dropped.  5 thru 7 would be BPA OUTLOOK As GM I know it is going to take more than 2025 to fix all our issues.  But to put us in the right direction I don't go crazy on Free Agents trying to get us into the playoffs when most likely we aren't going to be there.    WHAT'S YOUR PLAN

      ok but why did tony dungy write a forward for this book. he was already retired by the time canales entered the NFL, its not like he was the colts ballboy in the 2000s or anything

      But what if OP is ugly as all fug and has trouble getting laid with anything over about a rating of a 5 without first having to pay the young lady? This would make it difficult to comprehend for some. Some guys have to accept that they get the leftovers of the last call of the night chicks who couldn't get taken home by anyone else. I refer to these guys as the cleanup crew.  They handle all the ones the other guys turn down and quiver in their stomachs imagining copulating with.
