Honestly, this contrast was tough to miss on Sunday:

Panthers QB Sam Darnold: 26-for-38, 305 yards, 2 TDs, INT, 99.1 rating.

Jets QB Zach Wilson: 19-for-33, 210 yards, 0 TDs, 4 INTs, 37.0 rating.

Now, I really do think Robert Saleh is going to do better with Wilson, over time, than he did on Sunday—remember, he told Wilson on draft day that the organization would lift him up and wouldn’t ask for things the other way around. But, man, does Darnold look in control and competent with less asked of him (and Christian McCaffrey next to him).

One key, I was told, was Panthers OC Joe Brady’s tailoring his scheme to Darnold’s strengths and taking some of the mental load off him in an effort to get him playing fast and instinctively. Another, Darnold himself told me, was Brady’s giving Darnold options within the structure of the scheme out on the field—and building in alternatives so he never has to snap the ball into a bad call.

“It's just progression football,” Darnold said. “It's getting in the right play, if we're not in the right one, we got certain alerts for certain coverage. It's good football. To be able to get in the right play, if [Brady] calls a play and I feel like it's not a great play or it's the look we didn't want for that play, then I can check out of it and get into a good play.

So that's kind of what I really like about this offense, is you kind of have options to be able to change things at the line of scrimmage.” And having those defined options, without forcing Darnold to run the whole show, brings natural buy-in, since it’s Darnold himself seeing it and adjusting as he goes.

Then, there’s the presence of McCaffrey (“It's all up to the defense and how they want to guard Christian and if they want to double him or maybe cloud his side or bring two guys to his side, and we got other guys who can beat them as well, so it's fun when 22’s in there”) and a fleet of complementary pieces (D.J. Moore, Robbie Anderson) around him.

Long story short, Darnold has a lot of help. And for a young quarterback—whether it’s a rookie trying to get his footing or a guy trying to find solid ground after a shaky start—having that’s almost always a big factor in whether you make it or you don’t.

He was.  I thought it was just to fool the defense as I wrongfully assumed that he wasn't at that level of knowledge in the playbook yet.

Who could imagine that if you help your QB learn and give him options then it helps him be a better player.

Gase is a high school OC right now.  Seriously.  He was truly terrible.  Ironically, I’ve been lurking on the Saints boards and apparently Jameis isn’t allowed to audible.  Good stuff.  
 

edit - apparently he’s not, he’s just unemployed.  I ate the onion and fell for a satire article… 😔.  But damn, he was really bad

The only reason they are tempering expectations is because they don’t want to be wrong. All of these articles just say a whole lot of nothing.
 

Things turn on a dime in the NFL, but until they do just give him some credit lol. Even if he plays this well all season you couldn’t Rhule us out looking for a QB in the off-season.

Was Gase really that bad?

Yes, I do believe it was that bad.  But it sounds as if Gase is/was not the only coach that thought that was a good idea.

The way I'm reading it, Gase gave Darnold no control on the playcalling at all. I could see that for a young rookie but for someone that played three years with an organization? Seriously?

On a side note, I would like to know the plays Darnold did call an audible and how that play went.

      I'm super excited about the guys we're getting back, and fortunately this year, outside of Robert Hunt, we haven't had any season-threatening injuries. Rico has earned the start, but I am excited to have both available.  The team is finally turning into the run-first team Canales said he wanted to be. As for JT Sanders, I think he has lost the most be being out. He is probably our best receiving TE, but with the emergence of Mitchell Evans & with him and Tommy Tremble both absolutely balling in run blocking, it will be hard to fix something that isn't broken. I'm hoping Turk Wharton can help with our pass rush. We really havent gotten to see him much due to injuries, but we desperately need anyone to provide some pass rush juice, which is what he was brought to do. I'm the most excited about Jalen Coker returning. Theilen may have been the most clutch last year, but I've watched a lot of film, and Coker was the most consistent WR we had when he was out there last year.  I think he can be an ideal #2 to Tmac. While Coker doesn't have the raw athleticism XL does, his route running, savvy, and overall football IQ simply make him better.  I think with the fact Coker can play both outside and in the slot will give our pass game more versatility.  We have been running a lot of 2 TE sets, and I think Tmac & Coker should be the primary WRs for 12 personnel. The other WRs (XL, Tremayne, Renfrow, & Horn) all have roles, but I dont think any of them can fully replace what Coker can do. I do think Renfrow will be inactive this week if everyone is healthy bc of how valuable Tremayne is for ST and as a run blocker. So happy that we are playing meaningful football heading into November. We are still almost certainly a year away, but we are absolutely moving in the right direction
