Erving's "effort" on the play that got Sam hurt

Sam played his heart out and in return the team did also....for once I can actually say Sam did inspired that win for the offense.

He was willing to take the ball to the hospital with him on that play...so for that he gets the respect he deserves....for that game.

3 bad weeks, trade rumors, and he didn't turnover the ball and kept drives alive. Gotta give him credit.

Think he did what he was supposed to do, nothing more, sadly he paid a price for it.  Sure he appreciates his teammates response, luckily he blocks out the outside noise, not caring about social media, except Instagram.

Cam never took losses well which I never had an issue with because I want players to win, although he didn't take the losses maturely all the time.

I'd still rather have a QB that actually cared about winning and had some fire. We haven't had that since he left.

Cam also matured while in the league with regards to losses in general.  I didn't love the lack of maturity he showed at times, but he was a very young man at the time, and it is better than the alternative of not caring...

That said, can you explain the second sentence?  Darnold may not be as emotional as Cam but he certainly seems to get fired up, and I have no evidence he doesn't care about winning... It "feels" like Darnold shows more fire than Teddy did but that may not be accurate either (just in terms of getting excited after big plays etc)

It's a catch 22 kinda thing. Fans want their QB to be even keeled. Except when they want them to get fired up.

Fuggin lollygagger. He did not touch anyone on that play. If I’m Rhule, I show that play to the entire team as a definition of Zero effort, zero pride. Immediately afterwards Irvin is seen cleaning out his locker and leaving the facility. No further explanation required. Message sent -

And that "effort" doesn't surprise me nor does the fact that "effort" about got our QB knocked out.

it’s scary to think what would’ve happened had Sam’s helmet fully came off before hitting the ground

lol to all you people saying Sam didn’t slide, didn’t see any of that sentiment with Cam at the goal line…hmmmm…

Sam tried to score or get close to that first down marker in a 10-12 game mid 4th qtr, and possibly would have too.

He isn’t suppose to be wondering if his olineman are trying to catch butterflies on the other side of the field allowing LBs to go untouched full speed towards him, give me a break.

The most fire I have seen in a Panthers QB recently was probably Kyle Allen. But, I am also comparing them to Cam Newton who wore his emotions on his sleeve. But, in fairness, not every great QB was a fiery leader.

Off the field as in what if you don't mind me asking? I can agree with you about certain tendencies now within our culture due to social media. But I myself do not want to see anyone injured. If you were expecting good manners I've got news for you. I saw many Panthers fans gritting their teeth for a decade every time Newton won a game and then when we lost all hell broke loose. In that regard honestly people have been pretty easy going on Sam there are still some here who are unwavering in their belief in his abilities and their opinion. I have no idea what the future holds for Sam but the Panthers have and will look out for him he is financially secure. I just hope next offseason we have a plan A B and C if necessary at quarterback because this year we blew it.

Forgot to address this….I was a moderator for several years on my friends USC forum.  No word filters, no premium, open to any opposing fans from all the conferences.  There are no good manners on forums, but we also don’t self proclaim we’re any different.  clowns have boo’d our own players, screamed disparaging remarks about bad play.  My boards right now are no fun.

But there are limits, and those limits are concerning injury or mocking an injured player, on any team.  My season tickets were also in the rowdiest part of the stadium, lining the tunnel both teams must run out of, as you can imagine, the treatment and words directed at the opposing teams were not welcoming in the least (to state very mildly), but injury, rather it was an opposing player, much less your own?  Classless.  You stand with respect.

How he is still playing amazes me. The coaches see this every time he plays yet they trot him back out there.

I think all of us are prone to comparing our QBs to Cam, but really he was something else in so many ways.

Allen had fire... I personally think Darnold has gotten animated too.  I think the difference between those guys and Cam is that we didn't see them being dejected at tough times etc.  But I don't think that is indicative of not caring about winning... Just a different demeanor.

And plus by all accounts Darnold is a leader in the locker room.  I don't think people are just paying him lip service, either.  Unfortunately for his, his issues on the field mean it doesn't much matter how nice a locker room presence he is (although perhaps that portends a future role as a veteran backup for some young QB we draft...).

    • Won't say bust before he plays another game, but it was clear to me before the draft that wasn’t a number 1, or even close.  I guess if they can get dominant players around him and design for his deficiencies he could be serviceable. But why do you want to do all that when you can get a prototypical performance out of a guy that is whatever size and shape?  Do I cringe when I see him in the huddle? Yep, I admit it. Because I know what’s coming. But give me a real NFL arm and I’d feel a ton better about dealing with 5’10” 185. It’s always been his throwing/footwork/poor velocity for me.

    • Man, you bring up an amazing talking point. I remember thinking that though we didn't have the players we definitely had one of the best coaching staffs on paper. I figured that would translate to a great system where we could finally cycle in players year in and year out with sustained success. I was wrong after Year 1. 😂😪
