MNF - Fields

Did Fields start the season off terrible? Yes. He is a rookie and that’s expected, but he is progressing and getting better. That Steeler defense is no joke. Fields also has bad coaching (Nagy), a bad line, and not that many weapons yet he is still getting better each week. Much better place to be than a 4 year starter who is getting worse, ranks among the bottom of the league, and is owed north of $18 million next year.

To the people saying drafting Horn has helped us get off the field on 3rd down. In theory this is true, but Horn has only played like 2 games and we are still able to do this. DJax, Bouye, Taylor, Melvin and crew with the addition of Gilmore and Henderson would have been capable. Plus we would have our picks and a QB on the rookie salary. It’s a much better place to be. We would be looking at OL with our first 2 round picks to protect Fields, plus have an extra $18 million next year.

I know it’s easy to play the hindsight game, but a huge portion of this board was wanting this even after we signed Darnold.

Yeah but we heard the bad coaching angle with Darnold and it turned out to not be the case.

I liked Fields at the time but he appears to be a project. We will see in about 2-3 years how it is progressing.

I'd definitely rather have him than Darnold because at least there is the hope for the future, but nothing he did on Monday night looked like a rookie starting his ascension to elite status.

I guarantee you the ones who wanted fields would not have been doing that. I’d even wager the ones who wanted fields are the least reactionary of this fanbase. Not all but most.

Most bears fans were taking their frustration out on the coaching staff rather than fields. For some reason the coaches seemed to insist that he needed to stay in the pocket with a bad o line (particularly in the TB and Cleveland games) and never scramble. Both last week and this weeks game showed that when they let him run when needed that it completely changes the strategy on the defense.

But keep in mind this is the same board that had plenty of people in Cam’s rookie year that said “the pretty stats are nice but he doesn’t just win games like The Golden Calf of Bristol”. I don’t doubt we would hear that with fields too.

I don’t think anyone is really saying that in this thread. He made big time throws in big time moments. He’s shown those flashes in most of his games where you’re like wow he can be that guy. And he’s played a bit better every single game after that disastrous first start which I mostly blame on the coaches game plan. He’s in a terrible spot right now with the bears but I don’t think any fields supporter thought he was gonna come out and light the league up. That’s extremely rare. We got spoiled with Cam.

I know I live in southern Wisconsin and some of my friends are huge bears fans. They HATE Nagy.

Yeah, hence why I bristled at that comparison. Cam was far from perfect his rookie season be he was a phenomenon. Coordinators had to game plan for him.

Fields may be that guy eventually, but he is not that guy so far. He's a struggling, talented rookie QB trying to figure it all out.

We passed on this guy because we believed in Sam Darnold

And somebody, doesn’t belong in the nfl over that decision

i wanted fields desperately

he may not be perfect but he is ions better than what Rhule trotted out. Sitting right there to be taken

what he did against Clemson was nothing short of heroic after that hit to his ribs

he is a playmaker

Is the bar really so low that the board is gushing over a guy with twice as many interceptions as passing touchdowns?

Damn straight it is.  The Bears under Nagy have sucked   Big time sucked

the panthers suck, big time sucked.  Fields, once he started getting reps over Dalton got better and better

I think fields would look a ton better with a competent coaching staff. That staff there is abhorrent. Not saying he’d be lighting it up but the stats are misleading.

Huddle Poll:

Do we bring in Sam and pick up his 5th year option before he plays for us?

Yes: 0%

No: 100%

I know it doesn't fit the Huddle narrative, but in order to exercise the 5th year option, you must do so before May 3.  That's why we did it before he played for us.  If we waited until he played for us, it wouldn't have been available.

Now, the stronger argument was that he hadn't shown the NFL anything in three seasons.  Letting him play toward free agency after this year would have / could have been a motivator.  That's the part I never understood.

People focusing on Fields drive at the end probably forgetting Darnold did exactly that a few games ago…

Fields might turn out ok but right now he’s nowhere near an acceptable level

Nor is Darnold, he’s not good so don’t think this is a comparison post

One is a rookie who lost snaps to dalton in TC and regular season practice

one is a 4 year veteran, come on.

I think for me, I would be far more forgiving for a rookie like Fields than I am for a 3 year vet like Darnold.  Seeing him get better and better would be a process I could live with.  Watching Darnold be, well, Sam Darnold is just frustrating.
