Jerry Richardson knew you didn't have to win it all, just some.

Let's not forget that those early Panther teams were given some special advantages because the league wanted them to be competitive early.

The early Jaguars actually stayed competitive for a while even after those advantages ended. The Panthers... didn't.

Too harsh, we were in the Superbowl a couple years ago. Not the Jets, Jags, Bengals, Dolphins, Bears the Panthers.

We not that bad.....yet.

Honestly, none of us have any actual insight into what Richardson or Tepper really think or want.

I don't think anyone buys a team and says, "Yep, I want a team that wins a bit here and there, breaks even over the long run."

You have to understand that for guys like Richardson and Tepper, these football teams aren't their real business. They are toys (ones that are pretty much guaranteed to make money) and their goal is to impress their friends, entertain themselves and get them so notoriety in the higher echelons of life as they know it.

These guys aren't like Jones and the Cowboys, the Rooneys and the Steelers or the Maras and the New York Giants where the franchises are the majority of the families' wealths and standings. They want their teams to win mainly for the glory. The problem is that they don't have the same know how in growing, managing and developing football teams.

Of course, there's the Lions and the Ford Family. Sometimes having a long history doesn't create winning strategies, but their money didn't come from football either.

Oh Lord, no.

We'd still have Marty Hurney as GM.

I honestly believe if Jerry had weathered the storm, Hurney was on a short leash and would be gone by now.  Remember, Richardson fired his own kids, so as well as he liked Hurney, Marty was not cemented here.

Also, once the Daniel Synder saga eventually sees the light of day, what Jerry Richardson got accused of will be akin to jay walking.  While wrong, there's apparently a hell of a lot worse things being done out there.

Gantt said on numerous occasions that Marty was GM for life if he wanted to be.

The only reason he was let go in the first place was because he volunteered in order to save Rivera's job. And then a few years later, he was back.

Did Gantt also foresee Jerry firing his own kids?  Beat reporters (as he was at the time) think they know everything.  Jerry would not have endured this mess we are in now.  How I miss having losing seasons every other season.  Mediocrity?  I'd love to get back there.

Jerry Richardson didn't have any clue how to build a championship team.

Neither does David Tepper.

The one hope that I have with Tepper is that he at least might be willing to let the people he hires do their jobs.

Richardson never would.

I have a lot more faith in a guy who went from line cook to billionaire hedge fund manager than a guy whos biggest accomplishment was playing in the NFL and buying restaurants.

The Jerry Richardson who oversaw three winning seasons from 2002 to 2012, then fired the guy who produced that many winning seasons and division titles in five years in favor of bringing back the prior guy, only to watch that guy not produce even one more?

That's the guy you're saying wouldn't tolerate mediocrity?

Yeah...no, dude.

As to the thing with his sons, Richardson didn't exactly fire them "for performance reasons". It was because of family issues. Hell, Jon didn't even have anything to do with team performance. He was in charge of stadium operations.

This was a .500 team on average, the non-winning seasons were generally 7-9 and at least competitive.  Take out Fox's lame duck season backed by Rivera's rookie year and this was a decent franchise, no fewer that 7 wins. We'll be lucky to get 7 wins this year.  I was never a Marty fan, 1.0 or 2.0, but I seriously doubt Richardson would have kept Marty around if the wheels came completely off, say, like scenario we are in right now.

Marty stuck around here for the same reason Howie Roseman stays in Philly.

Both Marty and Howie are guys that are willing to let the owners dictate moves and then act like a scapegoat when those moves fail.

Richardson valued loyalty over ability. How do you think a cheerleader wound up Chief Operating Officer?

And that's the thing: Even if Richardson miraculously were to let go of Marty, you're gonna get another guy just like him. The one guy who wouldn't do that got fired despite the fact we were winning more consistently than ever.

So no, having Jerry back wasn't an option. Nor should it have been.

Is Tepper better? Not yet, but at least there's a chance.

    • WR – Jalen Coker, Holy Cross CB – Willie Drew, Virginia State Considering the depth chart, these two Undrafted Free Agents have a legitimate chance of making the roster.  I don't see much else, but some may make the practice squad. The competition for Coker is TMJ and Smith Marsette--two of the three should make the roster (if things were decided today).  At CB, Drew's competition for the final CB roster spot is weak , full of inexperienced Journeymen (Jamison gave up 80% completion rate in limited action with 47 PFF score; AJ Parker, 26, had 2 passes thrown to him and both were completed in limited action)  Having placed my reputation on the line (not much of a reputation or line), I will share my updated depth chart, at no extra charge (I realize this is premature--it is to show how they could make the roster): Offense (23) Left Tackle Left Guard Center Right Guard Right Tackle Ickey Ekwonu Damien Lewis Austin Corbett Robert Hunt Taylor Moton Yosh Nijman Chandler Zavala Cade Mays   Brady Christesen Wide Receiver Running Back Quarterback Tight End   Diontae Johnson Jonathan Brooks Bryce Young Ja’Tvion Sanders   Xavier Leggette Chuba Hubbard Andy Dalton Tommy Tremble   Adam Thielen Miles Sanders   Ian Thomas   Jonathan Mingo     Stephen Sullivan   I Smith-Marsette         Jalen Coker         T Marshall Jr           Defense (25) Jack Linebacker Defensive End Defensive Tackle Defensive End Sam Linebacker Jadav Clowney Derrick Brown Shy Tuttle A’Shwn Robinson DJ Wonnum Amare Barno Jaden Crumley Nick Thurmond LaBryan Ray DJ Johnson K'Lvon Chaisson       Eku Leota Cornerback Will LB Mike LB Nickel Cornerback JC Horn Shaq Thompson Josey Jewell Troy Hill Dane Jackson Willie Drew Michael Barrett Trevin Wallace Chau Smith-Wade Dicaprio Bootle   Chand.  Wooten         Strong Safety   Free Safety     Jordan Fuller   Xavier Woods     Jammi Robinson   Sam Franklin   Names in Italics are not part of roster–competing for a spot.  RED–draft Picks; BLUE-Undrafted Free Agents; GREEN–free agents.
    • He's worthy of being on the roster for the grunt work but not at his salary. Ideally he would stay at greatly reduced salary.  Unfortunately TEs are either receivers or blockers. I heard it said Gronk was last true TE
    • Mevis was quite a bit more accurate than Slye in college. I still to this day don’t know how a 70% college career field goal kicker got a shot in the NFL.
