Article-Proposed Trade Would Send Ex-Jets QB to NFC Squad, Last Chance at Redemption

I don’t post much here, more of a lurker, but saw this and wanted to share. Interesting article from a Jets site on Darnold’s possible future discussing a trade to the Saints while we would pay 60% of his salary. I have 0% faith that this would happen, but if Darnold actually went to the Saints I would throw a huge party.

He would go there. Get great coaching then become a potential HOFr and make us miserable for the next 12 years.

Doubtful.  Jameis Winston has shown way more in his NFL career, and Payton couldn't save him.  He's a football coach, not a miracle worker.

Darnold can't read the field.  He would need to spend 2-3 seasons in study hall as a backup before he had a chance to succeed IMO.  And you don't trade for an expiring contract to pick that kind of player up.  They might scoop him up for nothing after we dump him though.

Regardless of what the Panthers do with Darnold, this team clearly needs to bring in several QB’s and let them complete. To me not having any QB competition for Darnold was as big of an error as trading for him. There were several affordable options this past offseason….

When a team doesn’t have a proven starting QB they need competition.

Saints don't have cap room for a "salary dump" type player.

Not exactly true Winston was playing well until the injury, but he’s not fixing darnold I agree there

That's fair.  He statistically had his best year with the Saints, but it's kind of a marginal improvement.  I don't think they look at him as their future at QB.  Let's just put it that way.

True, I think they are infatuated with Taysom.  Winston I think deserves more of a shot than Sam going forward since he’s shown a lot more

    • I think the first 3 picks will be defensive players this time. At least that's how the draft is falling this year. I would not be shocked at all if our 1st pick is the number one safety in the draft. It appears he will be right there for the taking.
    • Man oh man. That 8-9 record without a playoff berth puts at 13 if I recall, ahead of both Atlanta and TB with their 8-9 records, due to our weaker SOS.   We might have been in range to deal for that guy. I hope he doesn’t last to 8. And I hope some AFC team picks him.
    • Cool. I am not wanting to debate or argue it. It is mostly my preferences. But a couple of things:  I just don’t think he sees the middle of the field well. But besides that I would rather spend a 1st round pick at different offensive positions if we went offense, otherwise we have neglected defense something fierce the last few years. Last 1st rounder was Horn. That’s like 5 years ago now.   Investments… gee the last 4 drafts we have used a 2, a 2, a low 1st and a top ten pick on WR. Bryce has been here three years, three of those picks were specifically for him.  And assets, I don’t think you are counting the haul we gave for the QB position. That counts and it was huge.   Add that up and add the Burns cap space we freed up when we traded him. We bought two guards and used the savings on them. Not on the defense.  I mean, that is a lot of investment in the offense when you put all that in a sack and weigh it.    peace. Appreciate your post.
