Report: David Tepper is “unhappy and embarrassed” by the contract he gave to Matt Rhule

Saban is better off in college, but I think too often people make it seem like he was a complete failure in the NFL.

Dolphins were 4-12 when he got there and in his first season they finished 9-7.

If Saban could have gotten Brees like he wanted (Dolphins doctors failed him in the physical), I think he would have done just fine.

I agree with your overall point though that it is difficult for college coaches to transition to the pros, but IMO Saban wasn't a bad NFL coach.  He just A) didn't stay long enough and B) didn't get the QB he wanted.

I don't think you are seeing the whole picture as far as Saban.  The following season, in 2006, Miami was 6-10.  And according to reports, the culture there got so bad at least 2 players tried to physically fight him:

"Daunte Culpepper tried to fight him one day and a security guy stepped in,” Glazer said on the Jan. 19 episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd. “And then I think his final straw is that he questioned Zach Thomas’ toughness and Zach almost kicked his butt. That just doesn’t work on this level.”

That's not a coach who will be in the NFL for very long.

He trusted Marty to do all that.

I will keep saying it until I’m proven wrong by year of ineptitude. I think Tepper is used to making expensive mistakes in order to learn, risk it all again, and not make the same mistakes.

There are trends that set the bad coaches apart from the good and the good from the great. The primary trend is elite QB play. I don’t care how great a coach is…If the QB is bad the coach will look bad. If the QB is good the coach will be good. If great…the coach will be great.

This isn’t rocket science. The trend is “get a great QB and your coach will look great.” That hasn’t existed in CAR since 2015.

Apart from great QB play you need a great defense. There are 8 realistic teams who can win the super bowl.

Bills, Chiefs, Chargers, Pats in the AFC.
Bucs, Packers, Rams, Cowboys in the NFC.

Outside of Mac Jones every team on that list has an elite QB. Every team on that list other than the Chargers also has a top 10 D.

The way to tell if Rhule is going to be a success is to get a QB. Then at least if he sucks..:you’ve got a QB for the next coach.

Patriots aren’t getting near a SB. Not with Mac Jones in anything but a dome in January. He’s already being exposed. Colts, Bengals and even the Titans have a better shot. And the Chargers have to make it first. After losing to HOU.

Have you watched him play at all the last month? He’s been awful since DCs realized he has no arm. Especially in cold and windy conditions. Play the underneath route and he can’t make them back off.

Was going to post the same thing. Much like Urban Meyer, but maybe not to same extent, their coaching styles just don’t work with grown ass men who make their own money. Rhule seems to be the polar opposite of those 2 but the outcome is the same. Too many of our players are soft and mentally weak. Other veterans just straight up don’t respect him or his “process” and it shows every Sunday on the field.

Rhule is clearly not a leader of MEN.

As a hedge fund billionaire, Tepper should completely understand the sunk cost fallacy and probably be one of the top ten people on the planet who has experienced it at such a large magnitude and learned from it in his business doings.

Or he could see value in a trade that the rest of the market is missing...

...that's how he got to be worth $16B --- when the rubes panic Big Tepp remains calm and Keeps Moving Ahead (KMA).

    • Yeah, I haven't seen anyone suggest he would be playing early. Most are saying if he contributed anything late this season it would be a win
