Elliott was extended in 2019 - Since then 4300 yds from scrimmage and 34 TDs in 3 seasons.

Cook was extended in 2020 - Since then 3200 yds from scrimmage and 23 TDs in 2 seasons.

Kamara was extended in 2020 - Since then 2800 yds from scrimmage and 30 TDs in 2 seasons.

Chubb was extended in 2021 - He's got 1400 yds from scrimmage and 9 TDs this year.

Henry was extended in 2020 - Since then 3200 yds from scrimmage and 27 TDs.

Mixon was extended in 2020 - in 2020 he was injured (600 yds, 4tds).  in 2021 he has 1500 yds from scrimmage and 16 TDs.

All these guys were extended for comparable money and are among the best in the league.  CMC seems to be the exception to your rule.

I would wager the contract extension will end up largely being the pinpointed time where you notice downward trend in production for almost all of them. 

Zeke's been on the decline since the got his extension.  last 2 years he hasn't even gotten to 1000 rush yards in 16 games. 

post extension - Cook's been hurt, Henry hurt, Mixon hurt, CMC hurt.    It's a young man's game in today's NFL to be a featured RB.

They’ve all been hurt and declined in production. They are not worth their contracts. poo Henry just missed half the season after signing his contract and he’s the best running back in the game. 
 

Cmc was always a ticking time bomb with his usage and frame. This isn’t crazy talk it’s just the way it is. Running backs take the most hits. It’s common sense. You do not build around the highest paid running back on a second contract with his usage and frame. His best season, historical season, we went 5-11. 
 

if we wanted to pay him then they should’ve moved him to wr and take on a more Curtis Samuel type of roll with a handful of runs out of the backfield but working the slot mostly. Now look at us. We have the worst offense in the league with the highest paid player playing a handful of games in 2 years. We are a joke.

The only thing worth trading for is a Pro Bowl level offensive linemen and a draft pick. Otherwise, you keep CMC. He's well worth the investment when he plays.

Among RBs, Elliott is 8th in yds from scrimmage.  Mixon is 3rd, Chubb is 5th, Cook is 6th, Kamara is 11th.  Sure they get hurt and miss a few games.  But the production is still among the league leaders.

I'll grant you these extensions are usually 5 years or so and by the 4th or 5th year the production has fallen off.  Usually the guaranteed money is somewhat front loaded, so if a guy has to be cut in year 4 or 5, the dead cap hit isn't crippling.  For example, when CMC reaches the old age of 29 in 2025, his cap hit is 13.6m but the dead cap hit is only 1.5m.

Similar sized guys like Payton, Martin, Dorsett, Thomas all played well into their 30's with some of their most productive years occurring in their late 20's and early 30's.  CMC could do the same.  Tossing him in the trash at age 24 is insane.  Especially when you don't save any money by doing it.  Just dumb reactionary panic.

 Zeke has 900+ rushing yards in 20 and 21.   Paying all that money to Zeke....and Tony Pollard easily has the ability to be a 1000k RB.   He frankly looks like the better overall RB IMO.  I like Zeke's pass protection and he still runs hard.  But Tony Pollard is the scary guy that can take it to the house. 

RBs outside their rookie deals getting hurt matters.  It matters CMC gets hurt.  Take Mixon, what if his next season looks exactly like his 2020?    And Henry's looks like his 2021? 

I'm not saying toss them in the trash.  I don't think MLBs are garbage.  But I don't think have the same value as in prior eras.  RBs simply have to be revaluated in today's NFL.  In terms of how much teams are willing to finanically invest in them.  They used to be primary pay guys because the offense ran through them back in th eday.  Offenses don't run through them anymore and it is easy to find guys who can run in the modern NFL pending you have an OL.  The NFL is going to keep trending toward the pass as it has.
