Picking up Sam Darnold's 5th year option before he played a down for the team has to go down as one of the worst decisions in franchise history.

We never needed to see a down from Sam to know not to pick up his 5th, there was 3 years of proof saying not to do it.  We always had the choice to tag him. Yeah it would have cost more but with a guy who put up 3 years of terrible film in the NFL it was always more of a hope and less of a chance of ever needing it. Then again we wouldn't have sent so much in a trade if they had watched any of that film and not his youtube highlights...

The reality is these idiots thought they got a steal by picking up his 5th and now they are choking on it and having good players leave because they wasted 19 million dollars on a guy who isn't even good enough to backup this year. There isn't any other way to spin it other than blaming Brady for this but the video of the decision being made is very damning because no one got up and was like 'WTF are yall looking at? This is a bad idea.'

Incompetence at the highest level. They guaranteed the statistically worst QB in the NFL $19m before he even played a down for the team.

I hope they clean house next year. Little hope with Tepper running the show though. Sad days for Panthers fans.

That should be obvious to everyone not named Matt Rhule.

Darnold is ‘a 1000 percent improving.  I’m sorry you can’t see it’

rhule had a blank canvas to build a team

while some franchises use paint brushes for their franchises, ours uses crayons

Keeping Darnold accomplishes three things here and outside of the short term pain for us fans, it's all positive.  Settling on Darnold this year keeps us from drafting a QB in a very substandard class.  It almost assures us of a bad, if not horrible, season.  Thirdly, when this happens, Tepper almost has to fire Rhule.

So 2023 sets up like the onset of Rivera's tenure; new staff, new outlook and almost certain to be drafting the franchise QB of the future.

    • He has attempted 8 shootout goals in his NHL career and made 1. He is among our worst SO guys on the entire roster in terms of career stats.
    • Against Miami, the Panthers were behind by 17 in the 2nd quarter facing a 4th - 5. Young completed a 21 yard pass and they went on to score 7 on that drive. Then in the 4th, down by 4, they faced a 4th - 5 and again, he completed a 17 yard pass and they went onto score a TD for the win. He also accounted for 2 of the 3 TD's.  As I said, he got them in that mess and no doubt, Rico gets credit as well, but missing on either of those 4th down conversions hands the ball over and results in 1 or 2 less TD's giving them a loss. As you said though, that's just a small quibble. The real question is how does the FO see it?  I am guessing they see it as something to build on. I think most peope here see it as a total loss and fully expect the FO to see it that way as well. Time will tell.
    • Kochetkov is just too streaky. TBD if Freddie is doing that too. Freddie is the more reliable goalie over his career. The Bussi kid looks like he could be a solid #2 eventually.  Just need to figure out the #1 guy. Same as almost every year. It's not talent, it's consistency and being able to step up in the playoffs.
