Person talks QB options...

...and in the process, confirms something he previously said was unknown.

Watson was not willing to waive his no-trade clause for Carolina before the deadline, preferring to go to Miami. But now that the Dolphins have shut the door on Watson, would he consider coming to Charlotte? It likely depends on who the other interested teams are. Tampa Bay, looking to reload after Tom Brady’s retirement, has a stacked roster and ascending offensive coordinator in Byron Leftwich.

More excerpts about various options...

Deshaun Watson:

Before the trade deadline, multiple teams offered Houston packages that included three first-round picks and two third-round selections, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Houston reportedly has been unwilling to move from that asking price for a player who — despite his off-the-field issues — is one of the league’s top quarterbacks and is still in the prime of his career.

Mitch Trubisky:

The Panthers could try to sign Trubisky to a short-term deal to either compete with or supplant Darnold, and it would not preclude them from taking a quarterback in the draft.

But the Panthers have gone down this road before — taking a flier on a young quarterback who was a top-3 pick in the hopes he might flourish in a new system — and look at how that’s gone.

Jimmy Garoppolo:

Teammates rave about Garoppolo’s leadership and presence, but critics say he’s a game manager who needs everything to be right around him to be successful.

That said, he’s an upgrade over Darnold and could be in the mix for the Panthers if they miss out on Watson.

Derek Carr:

The Panthers would be interested in Carr if he becomes available, but that seems like a pipe dream at this point.

Kirk Cousins/Carson Wentz

These two are lumped together because, while NFL personnel officials consider them a step up from Darnold, neither is the Super Bowl-caliber quarterback whom team owner David Tepper has said he’s seeking.

Team sources said the Panthers never called about Cousins, whose $45 million cap number makes him unmovable without a new contract.

Kenny Pickett/Malik Willis/Desmond Ridder

All three of these guys impressed in their own way last week in Indianapolis. Pickett is the most NFL-ready quarterback in a weak class. Willis has a big arm and a high ceiling, while Ridder impressed the Panthers — and other teams — with his makeup and overall skill set.

Given the quality and depth of the offensive tackles, Fitterer said last week that it probably makes the most sense to take a tackle at No. 6, but added: “That will come down to whatever we do in free agency.”

Desmond Ridder is a name that did trend upwards after the combine for a number of teams. Going into the combine the flavor was this was the 2013 class all over again but now scouts seem to be saying these dudes have potential.

I really think there can be enough smoke drummed up for someone like Washington or Pittsburgh to trade up.

With Rodgers setting new QB standard of $50 million year, it makes sense to draft rookie QB so we can take advantage of 5 year window.

Even with 4 MVP’s, GB still only has one SB with Rodgers.

The QB price tag depletes the rest of team in today’s market

Jonathan Alexander mentioned Carson Strong as another trade down option.

He didn't deserve the last one. That belonged to Kupp hands down.

    • Do you see the vision?  As of now our Carolina Panthers don’t have an identity. We are not an offensive powerhouse and on defense we only started getting it together towards the end of the year last year. In my opinion we are much closer to having an incredible defense that scares the daylights out of people. I say the answer is simple and we fully commit to that possible identity.    Emmanuel McNeil Warren (E man)  This guy is like a shark lurking around ready to attack anyone. Fearless. He is easily a top 20 talent in my eyes, and the only reason he isn’t more talked about is because he’s from Toledo. Do your due diligence as panther fans and watch his tape I beg you. Once you’re done watching let me ask you this, if you dropped E - Man into the strong safety spot on the Buckeyes, he isn’t being talked about as one of the best prospects we’ve seen in some time given the skill set you see with this guy? I think so. Put his name on the card and turn it in at 19.    Jacob Rodriguez  High effort, High energy, High IQ guy that flies around the field. We all know Jacob at this point. My only concern is he’s a little bit too good and I’m not sure he makes it to us at our pick in the second. With the additions of Jacob and E- Man I think our defense goes to top 5 in the league. We would have a duo of linebackers that rival anything we’ve had in our past. I’m not a GM so I don’t know what the possible answer could be, but if there’s a way we can comfortably trade up in the second to secure this guy I think we find a way to do it.    Spend the rest of our picks fixing the O - line.    Thoughts Panthers fans? Who’s the ideal duo for yall?
    • OL is arguably much more important to the success of a young QB. (Or any QB)
    • Didn’t get around to watching this one but looks like Pistons played their starters and actually tried…? Unlucky that they sit vs Magic, etc and try vs us. Hopefully we can beat the Heat and then Magic or 6ers with no Embiid. BUT if not, the NBA really should give us the lottery win this year like they did Mavs last year. Another high pick could be our final missing piece and have us as legit top contenders next year and going forward if we’re healthy. Or trade it for a Giannis type
