The Saints are using dummy years in contracts to flush cap hits?

I just read that Watson is now leaning towards the Saints as a trade. Fine with me. Panthers have done okay in FA so far, keep our young guys, add a few more quality FA's (since we have the cap space), get the best QB they like in the draft at 6, and built from there. World doesn't end If Watson doesn't come here. Down side we would have Brady and Watson to deal with 2x a year. Have to beat the best to be the best.

The Saints have been expert cap manipulators for years. We do the same poo, they're just a lot better at it than we are.

Which is crazy to me because if there is one thing Tepper should be best at is fugging around with numbers.

One would think. Sure seems like none of his business acumen has translated. We might have the Courtney Brown of NFL owners. The absolute can't miss home run slam dunk prospect who busts hard anyway.

When you go from being $70M over cap to $30M under… that’s insane.

Not true -- https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-orleans-saints/cap/

Cap Space (w/All) $-4,090,219
Cap Space (w/Top 51) $4,024,781

It's possible they clear the space to add him, but the question is who will be on the team to play with him worth while, they've already restructured most of their main guys.

I'd wonder who else they could look to after having to make room for him that they could then restructure to create actual cap space to address their other roster vacancies.

Oh yea?

Saints signed S Marcus Maye, formerly of the Jets, to a three-year, $28.5 million contract.

The deal reportedly includes $15 million guaranteed. The Saints lost Marcus Williams to the Ravens on Wednesday and have answered with one of the next best things in a deep safety market. Franchise tagged by the Jets last spring, Maye made it only six games into 2021 before tearing his Achilles' tendon in November. In the context of that injury, this is a very generous

They really aren’t. As posted above we’ve done it too but we’ve done it with Paradis and they do it with Brees. Because it’s their star players they also have many contract years to spread things out. We on the other hand get one year out of our big deals like Teddy.

The difference with us and them is they “waste” money on star players and we “waste” it on bridge QBs and other mediocre players.

agree, this idea that Loomis is some genius that can do things that no other GM can is ludicrous.

They are doing the same thing other teams do and to be honest its simple math, most fans just don't want to take time to figure it out, same could be said about the media.

When everyone was reporting them to be 50-60 million over the cap and wondering how they were going to get under you could look at their books and predict the moves.

Even without cutting players most teams usually have a few players in the current year with large current year salaries that can restructure.  For example Roby has a $9m salary this year, they could easily convert it to a signing bonus and free up $8m this offseason if they need it.

Also fans have a habit of seeing what they want to see, they see the Saints adding certain players but they don't notice the guys that the Saints have had to release or let go over the years.  They don't notice the amount of dead money that the Saints carry at times.

What has helped the Saints more than anything over the past 5 years was their 2017 draft class, which might go down as one of the best draft classes ever that didn't include a QB.

Lattimore, Ramczyk, Williams, and Kamara were all good players on really cheap rookie deals.  Even Hendrickson who didn't play much early, started games during his 4th year and then signed a good size free agent deal last year which will now get the Saints a 3rd round comp pick.

FWIW, Nothing is official on these transaction yet. Cannot even be submitted to the league office before 4 PM. Roto really should not report them as "signed."
