the Reality and the Facts are that a divisional rival appears to be out maneuvering the panthers for “another Sam darnold” (like lol why do I really doubt that you have some kind of meaningful on field comparison to make between the two)

Lol what?  The reality and facts are that the Saints traded for an extra mid first round pick this year.  Everything else is weird premature speculation on your part.

Saints looking to move up the board and jump the panthers for QB

WE DON'T NEED A QB IN THE FIRST ROUND OF THIS DRAFT, FOR GOD'S SAKE PLEASE LISTEN.

Malik Willis was quite literally the WORST QB UNDER PRESSURE IN CFB LAST YEAR. I'd take Howell, Pickett, Bailey Zappe, and Grayson McCall over him next year. I'd give Sam Darnold a god damn Patrick Mahomes contract before drafting Willis.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't like Pickett or Howell in the 1st either. Give me Bailey Zappe in the 4th or Grayson McCall in the 1st in 2023.

Saints really devaluing next years picks for this year with a 1st year HC.

This was my first thought. New coach wants to build HIS team immediately. Willing to bet that the elevated cap space will allow him to play more in free agency next year.

You seem very rational about this…

1, 2 and 3? You need to know when they are. Not only are they future picks, the 2nd is in 2024. Also, the 3rd is 101, a comp pick right before the 4th.

16 is a decent pick and by giving the Saints two firsts, you take a big risk of them doing well so that the 1st next year is in the 20s as is the 2nd two years from now.

You are overrating future picks and that 3rd since it’s a comp pick. NO hasn’t had a top 10 pick in a while and if they hit in a QB and WR like suggested those future picks aren’t as valuable as the one you gave up. It’s still risky in my book.

I actually agree with you that based on old school charts the Saints didn't give up as much as people think.  Usually future picks are valued a round later, so next years first would be like a 2nd this year, would you trade a 1st this year for a 2nd and 3rd this year?  Nope

but here is what I'm thinking Philly thought, lets cancel out the trdes like this.

Going from 16 to 18 and receiving a 3rd isn't bad, close to the charts.

So basically they are trading #19 for a 1st next year and a 2nd the following year.  Based on traditionally charts that isn't much in return but Philly is basically gambling that the 1st next year will be better than #19, in a class that on paper might have more QBs therefore they could get lucky and get a valuable pick.  Even if they don't want a QB, maybe its a pick they can flip again next year for a team that wants a QB.

Teams devalue future picks because everyone is trying to win now but in reality if they end up with #10 next year, that is better than #19 this year if the team is thinking long term.  Of course this is all a gamble because they end up with pick #25,

Also the fact that Philly had 3 1st round picks before this trade is probably playing into it.  Maybe from a cap perspective this not only spreads out 1st round contracts, but also future extensions.

Its definitely a gamble, but with Brady coming back to Tampa Bay and if you expect the saints to draft a QB its not crazy to think that the 1st from the Saints next year could be a pretty high pick.

I take 1,2,3 for 16 everytime. I know the unwritten rule is a future pick is worth one round less than a now pick. Doesnt work with 1st, and frankly that saints pick has a better chance at being much better than 16 next year. It is a comp 3rd, still a great pick and better than 4-7.  Again simply the trade is for 1st for 1st, and iggles get a future 2nd and comp 3rd. Even the value number is off the on trade charts. Iggles had 3 ones and that allowed this trade.

You could get about ANY player in the league for a 1,2,3 even if two are in the 23-24. This is Everette Brown Smarty Marty Herniay bad and it can be waaaaaaay worse if the saints finish with a 4-13 record.... If the saints needed _____ that should have offered that same package and got a proven player. I do see the short term vs long term deal, but this draft doesnt have 16 elite players, I dont even think it has one. Its a high risk trade with terrible odds.

I think theres a decent chance thats hes still staring at his phones until day 3, agains his draft spot is the hardest for me to pinpoint. I do think Pitt will past on him with their 1st, but if hes still there form their 2nd......

    • Its worse because the NFL would never allow all the teams to join the NFC East or something.  There's a firm divisional structure with a salary cap to make it competitive.
    • Practice tweets/news from today (will post videos in the next cpl of posts if there are any worthwhile): K Ryan Fitzgerald now wearing #10. QB Hendon Hooker has #12. WR Dalevon Campbell has #81. RB DeeJay Dallas was in #1 but it's currently a practice-only number as he was playing the part of Jag's RB Travis Etienne on the scout team (his real number is #20). WR Jalen Coker walked out with a compression sleeve on his left leg. Later seen on the bike. LG Damien Lewis not wearing the red practice jersey anymore, should be full go for Thursday. LT Ikem Ekwonu was at practice but not dressed out as he recovers from an appendectomy. Worked out on the sideline with Jalen Coker + RB Jonathon Brooks. WRs Tetairoa McMillan, Xavier Legette, and Hunter Renfrow were all exempt from special teams practice. Likely three starters for Thursday. OT Yosh Nijman got the first looks at LT today. During the post-practice presser, Canales said that there was a lot of good energy today and that offense won the 1-on-1s which included a 40yd throw from Bryce Young to Xavier Legette early to "set the tone" (per Canales). Also stated that Icky is currently day-to-day. Commented on having a training plan for Coker this passed offseason and that he did a great job following it (though the quad issue is one he has had in the past). Renfrow's locker is between Dalton and Hooker (left) and Young (right). Sounds like they're trying to get Renfrow on the same page as the QBs in this offense to replace AT's role as that second set of "QB eyes" on the field. Icky talked about his symptoms that led to his surgery and mentioned that his dad, a physician, was who got him to go. Won't rush himself back, but hasn't ruled out playing Sunday. Renfrow said he had others, but he was either going to play for the Panthers or not at all. Said Bryce called him during the process and that when he was released the team mentioned that the Thielen trade might be coming. Got the news while picking up a trailer at his other job. Also said that Canales told him that he didn't think that he was physically ready yet but wanted him back on the practice squad. The Coker injury changed the calculus.
    • Most things that made it good are already dead, imo. The transfer portal combined with the money makes it all a complete joke. There’s no longer any sense of school pride, at least for me. If my team does well it is in large part because they paid better guys than the next team. When I went to college, I had some basketball players living in the same apartments and they’d show up to parties sometimes. You’d see guys around and they were just normal broke college kids like you. There was comraderie and pride that these guys saw the same school you loved and wanted to be there just like you. All of that is gone. It’s pro sports now, but worse. The players aren’t there long enough to feel like you know the team. No connection, just bragging rights over who has the largest and most affluent donor base.
