Panthers could have had a second rounder

Let’s not dig ourselves in a hole for next year.

I was really happy to see them say that.

Same.

You can tell having to sit and wait without second and third round picks didn't sit well with Fitterer.

My favorite part was Rhule asking Fit what he was going/wanted to do. I could be wrong but something tells me it wasn’t always like this.

Rhule also let out that Scot picked the 7th rounder Baylor CB. It was between two players, honestly the Seattle CB traits are there as well. Along with being fast, hes kinda tall and long armed. Most times the fastest guy is some 5'9 165 guy..... not boogie.

I liked Fitterers comment about “you can recoup a 3rd rounder, but not a one or two”. Good insight into how he measured the investment.

I'm guessing he was talking about comp picks. Those start in Round 3.

One final note from Breer's article...

Breer closed this week's space with a sendoff for Kevin Colbert. It consisted of kind words from personnel guys all over the league acquainted with the long time Steelers GM.

Here's what Scott Fitterer said:

"He’s just a gentleman. He’s humble. He’s hard-working. He’s a scout at heart. He’s what I would think most GMs would aspire to be. He’s got just such a good presence about him. He’s so approachable. He’s a lot like Ted Thompson. Everybody respects him. You can’t find anyone to say a bad word about him. Just an unbelievable person. … The first time I met him, I think it was the Whistle Stop at the combine, like 20 years ago. I think he was with the Lions at the time. And I can say he’s the same guy now as he was 20 years ago, the first time I met with him. … He hasn’t changed a bit. Just an unbelievable person.

    • I wonder if they'd consider trading Rasheed Walker to a team that needs tackle help but missed out in the draft?
    • LOL. This is such a Panthers fan take.  Anyone who falls to us must suck because some other team didn't take them before.  We got lucky with Lemon, Thieneman, and Freeling all falling to us (honestly any of the three is a A+) but the WR and S positions are much deeper than the LT position in this draft.  We got the LT w/ the most upside at 19.  Mauigoa played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the nfl.  Spano played RT in college and some think he is a guard in the NFL due to short arms.  Blake Miller played RT in college and is not as good as Freeling.  Proctor is a true LT but his ability to handle quick edge's worries me (see Icky).  Freeling is a true LT and a gifted pass protector.  Many think he has a very high ceiling and will benefit from not having to start right away.  This is how you build a franchise.
    • After watching Cam get killed for years behind a bad Oline and having to watch the 2021 and 2023 Olines I will never complain about this team putting resources into that spot.  We got a true LT who could really push Rasheed Walker for the day 1 job. Go back and watch Iceky's draft profile from 2022 and all the talk was Ickey would be an all-pro guard in a zone blocking scheme, but he could play LT in a gap power run scheme. That's why Ickey looked really good when Wilks took over and we just started running gap run plays and just mauled people up front but under Canales we've been more of a zone running team. Ickey can survive at LT with his pass blocking but his true strength will always be his ability to just move guys in the run game and that's a skill set that's better used at guard.  Take another OT later on day 3 to learn from Moton to take over RT in a couple of years and let Walker and Freeling battle it out for the day 1 LT job then next offseason trade one of Hunt of Lewis and let Ickey move inside to guard.
